Anyone doing oil change without ramps or stands

I was skeptical until I spoke with my GOOD foreign car mechanic,, and he was using one on the BMWs and Benzs.

You can by them at most marine stores for ~$50,, West Marine,, or Gander Mtn. etc. The first time I used it,, I pulled the plug and ONE drop came out!

It was explained by the same mechanic that the pump was even more effective at getting sludge out of the bottom of the pan since it actually sucked up the sludge,, as opposed to just letting it flow. Seems real to me!

A time tested and safe means of raising the car. You can actually put 2x6's under the rear tires too, so the car remains level. This is helpful for the cvt fluid change

I recommend the hand pump version. Although the shop air one works better - stronger vacuum - it's a PITA to always hook up shop air just to run it. Unless you intend to use it a LOT

 

We use Bosch filters, picked up at the local auto parts store.

I could order OEM filters, but why?

 

No offense, but I'm still skeptical. I have read for years that these devices simply don't extract enough of the oil or access pockets of sludge. Many instances of the withdrawn volume being significantly less than the equivalent drained volume. Perhaps the technology has changed a bunch but it still seems that gravity is your friend. So long as you open the drain plug when the engine is still warm, and have the patience to wait for the small drips to come to an end (minimally 1/2 hour) I still believe you get the best drain.

As I suggested,, I too was quite skeptical,, but I have since used this pump for all kinds of engines from large Diesel Gen Sets,, to lawn mowers. As I said,, with the Prius,, I pulled the plug on the first change,, and got two drops,,,and then nothing. Besides,, have you ever seen a lube monkey wait 1/2 hour to get the last few drops? I don't think so!

Also,, you can manipulate the hose around the oil pan and find the lowest point.
