When I looking into buying my Gen III, I was asking the dealer about maintenance schedules, price of maintenance, etc... I was told that sice the Gen III is new, Toyota Corp wants to see the cars under normal driving conditions. Because of this, I was told Toyota Corp was offering a 50% off special on a 5-year / 50K mile service package. I did lots of research and spoke w/ several dealers who confirmed this. They said this service package will service the vehicle to the exact specifications as stated in the owners maintenance manual. Price includes tire rotations, oil, filters, fluids, inspections, etc... I ended up going for it because the price was about $1200....not bad considering that all service will be covered for 5 years / 50K. Paying as you go would end up costing more (if you followed the maintenance schedule in the manual.) I figured on a 1st year model / advanced vehicle, it's probably best to have it serviced at the dealer. I was also told that only Prius Certified mechanics are allowed to work on the Prius.
Was any one else made aware of this? Or is this a regional thing? Or?

I think they fed you a line... have you done the math for the 5k, 10k, 20k, 25k, 35k, 40k, and 50k "5k" service, 15k and 45 "15k" service, and 30k service costs combined? Does the pre-paid come out w/ a discount? If so, significant enough to be cheaper than what that money would earn in a bank account?

At $100 for an oil change and rotation, $150 for the 15 and 45 k services, and $300 for the 30 k service the total is $1300. I'd bet this is what my dealer would charge if you just asked them for the xx mile service.

Of course, you're paying top dollar for a lot of inspect this check that, and very little actual service. I don't think $1200 was any great deal.

That doesn't sound right. I don't think the Prius Tech is going to change your oil or rotate your tires. They are going to have the same kid do those kinds of things that does them on every other car and he may have been working at Micky Ds the week before.

I think the price is to high and I doubt it is 50% off. I think I would tell them "no thanks".

Oil change and tire rotation should cost in the neighborhood of $50 at a Toyota dealer. If it's more, your getting ripped off. Avoid the "dealer recommended service", and just go with what is in the manual. Spark plugs, engine coolant, fliuds, are not due to be changed in 50k. Learn how to change the engine air filter, and the cabin filter your self and save some $$$$.:)

I agree with all of this, except that with the 0W20 forcing us to synthetic oil, the oil change and tire rotation will be more than $50. At least at my dealer it will be (even after the discount coupons they gave me when I bought the car).

I always change my own engine and cabin filters. I'm not paying the dealer $65 to replace a filter I can buy for $20 or less and change in two minutes or less myself.

Before I bought the service package, I called 3 dealers and asked them for a quote for the 5k, 10, 15k, 20k, etc.. up to 50k and told them to go by the service manual. The least I was quoted was $2,100 and most was $2,400. Of course, this is going "by the book" (service manual) and they're charging for "tech time" as well. Normally, I wouldn't follow the service manual to a tee, but w/ this being new year, etc... I decided to go for it. Maybe it's a good deal. Maybe it's not. I guess if anything, I just "pre-paid" for service. Rats!

If you have the money and it makes you feel better to prepay it's an OK deal for you.
