this morning i did a testdrive in the 2010 prius with the 17inch wheels
my gen 2 is 16 inch touring wheels.

EU factory fuel use is 4/100km so 58.8mpg

its really hot outside so i used AC on my gen 2 and the new gen 3.

the gen 3 is a demo car ofcourse and already for weeks now, so not that new anymore.

i did 2 runs in my gen 2 ( to and from the gen 3 test run ) and 1 run of 2 hours in the gen 3.

    in my prius i get 4,2 ( 56mpg ) on the MFD and on the gen 3 i get 4,4. ( 53,5mpg )
    this is using the ecomode..
    in normal mode i go up to 4.6 ( 51mpg )

is the fuel use display in the gen 3 more acurate? because the 4.2 ( 56mpg ) on the MFD in the gen 2 make's in to a real life use of 4.6 ( 51mpg )

if the 4.4 is real life use then OK the gen 3 is better but if there is the same 0,4 diif. then i will get 4,8 ( 49mpg ) on the gen 3 prius.

    anyone any comment on this?

I would estimate that I get about 5-7 MPG better on my Gen III then on my Gen II. I am still on my second tank, but here is what I have noticed.

    1) Warm up cycle is significanty faster, so less of a MPG hit there.
    2) Less rolling resistance, so your glides are longer. Also several segments that I would have to start the ICE in rolling hills, I am now able to glide over without starting the ICE.
    3) 46 MPH ICE start instead of 41 MPH
    4) For highway mode 50-55 MPH you can use 20 TPS 19-20 IGN for an 80+ level sustained speed segments.

These are the most notable for me and have added up to better MPG so far.

I drive a Gen II, so my interest here is purely vicarious...

At least in the Gen II, there is some small power flow from the HV
battery to MG1 and to the wheels in the "no arrows glide" state. It's
really small, something like 0.7 HP -- don't know the electrical
equivalent, sorry. But this does contribute to unnaturally long glides.

I acknowledge that the Gen III has many subtle improvements,
including a marginally improved Cd. That said...

Could it be possible that the seemingly improved glide be due to a
slightly higher power flow from the HV battery?

I suspect it's too early in the Gen III roll-out for the serious techno-
types to have looked this deeply into the workings of the new HSD.

    Time will tell...

Package V with 17" wheels and 38/36 PSI; about a 4 MPG, or 8% real world improvement over my Gen II.

At 2,000 miles, I'm just starting to approach 50 MPG on my 70 mile, mostly 70 MPH highway commute, versus around 46MPG with my Gen II.

One rainy morning, I took (more and slower trafic) I-95 one-way instead of the (less traffic) Sawgrass Expressway and got 56 MPG. I'll be moving up to 40/38 PSI and my Gut tells me that 50 MPG is going to be my number.

I'm happy; it sure beats the 16 MPG I was getting with my Acura MDX with PREMIUM fuel.

i am thinking that the bigger ICE and RPM maybe are perfect for US highway speeds
here in the EU some of those US highway speeds are used for regional roads and the normal highway speed here is more like +75mph.( 120kmph ) but i dont drive past 62mph ( 100kmph )
so also not on this test drive.

maybe the sweet spot for the 1.8 gen 3 is lower then for the 1.5 gen2?

    @bestmapman

i can not seem to get into a glide.. its really hard.
i did notice when i look at the HSI when i push the pedal just a little bit the small regen bar go's away and the ice is not showing to be run.. but its not feeling like in then gen2 that your really in netrual
in the gen2 i really feel the moment where the car starts to roll
maybe thats because when your off the gas pedal in a gen 2 there is more regen and in the gen 3 you go to a less regen more glide mode?

maybe al in al it also to do with the fact that i went from a normal car to the gen 2 prius and thats a BIG stepp and now from the GEN2 to the GEN3 is not so big anymore...

the cost for a new prius and the better mpg dont really are that intresting anymore because its to small..unlike going from a normal car to the gen2 or gen 3

he? is your Xgauge still working or how do you get that info?
i connected the canview 4+ and that no longer works on the EU prius..i guess thats the same for the us one.

or how do you get that TPS reading now?

Is anyone else comparing hand calculations to the computer's calculations? I'm wondering if anyone is having issues similar to the ones Dav is experiencing with wildly variable MPG #s.

I usually use N for my glides both in the Gen II and III. I have noticed longer glides in the Gen III consistently in the same areas. I use N for just the reason you state, there is still some current flow with no arrows. Using N there is none.

On my scanguage, the regular gauges work fine. RPM, TPS, IGN, Wth all work normally. The xgauage part SOC, BTA, etc. do not work properly. Also the fuel flow GPH is not working properly. With 0 RPM I still show .02 GPH.

My Gen 3 is in the shop getting repainted after being vandalized. I had 1800 miles on it when it went in and was getting 53-55 MPG on my 180 per day RT commute. I rented a Gen 2 from Enterprise with 10,000 miles on it; 46.5 MPG after almost 1000 miles. Gen 3 appears better by 6-9 MPG. I want my Gen 3 back!! Of course both are better than my Gen 1 which was gettin "only" 42 MPG after more than 250,000 miles, so no complaints on any of them, really.

I'm seeing 2-6mpg better in the Gen III than the Gen II on average.

So far highway is significantly higher, averaging in the mid 60's MPG. City I am having some trouble getting past where I was in my old Gen II, hovering around 70-75 MPG in the Gen III. My ScanGage is reading anywhere from 6-10MPG lower. We'll see on the next fillup how accurate the Prius is.

As far as a solid comparison between G3 and G2, it may take 6 months to run the G3 through midsummer to midwinter temperatures and get more of them (and their drivers) broken in, but based on the data already available, we can get a good feeling for the DIFFERENCE = G3mpg minus G2mpg

    METHOD.................DIFF (mpg)

    EPA Testing........... 4.0
    EPA Website.......... 1.9 (2010 - 2009)
    EPA Website.......... 4.6 (2010 - ave of 2004-2009)
Your PC polls.......... 2.0 (as of today)

Looks like the G3 is between 2 and 4 mpg higher than G2. Considering need for break-in and more driver experience in G3 (more newbies), answer may be more like 3-4 mpg in a few months. Time will tell.

The data in your polls already answer the question, what is the probability that G3 has better MPG, and what is prob that G2 is better?

    G3 better (98%)
    G2 better (2%)
    [using the t-test.]

But it looks like the actual difference in MPG is not large...

    Ok, let's talk smack ;)

I am willing to wager a small amount that a G2 with EBH and radiator blocking does as well as a G3 with EBH for winter driving. At least within the few percent that most of us would not find a worthwhile or credible difference.

It seems pretty clear by now that summer driving is similar; winter driving will be interesting.
