    Summary:

    • Jetta gasoline is cleaner than TDI despite heavy marketing of the "Clean Diesel".
    • Civic Hybrid is generally cleaner than the non-hybrid version, except for CO.
    • Lexus HS 250h is cleaner than the Insight, except highway NOx.
    • Prius is the king of clean car.
    • Subaru WRX STI is the dirtiest of all. It is 10x to 27x dirtier than the Prius due to turbo.
    • Jetta TDI is cleaner than WRX STI but STI has more than 2x hp.
    Unit:

    NMOG - g/mi
    CO - g/mi
    NOx - g/mi
    HCHO mg/mi
    PM - g/mi
    Hwy NOx - g/mi

What units are these measurements recorded in?

Cool. Where'd you get the info from? Can you imagine before we had ULEV cars? I remember our Corolla was a LEV and then our Camry was ULEV and the Prius was SULEV/PZEV-AT lol... keep going up the scale.

Everything is in gram per mile except HCHO but it is always N/A.

    Hybrid Models Comparison

It is surprising to see Ford Fusion hybrid not as clean as RX 450h SUV! Toyota and Lexus hybrids are among the cleanest cars available.

Camry hybrid produce no Nitrogen Oxide? That's the data straight from CARB.

Thank you for sharing this data with us (and for providing a reference).

How about comparing other popular vehicles, though? Is there really that much difference among the Prius, HCH, Insight and FFH when you compare them all to regular Camry or Chevy Malibu or a Ford F150 or a Kia Something?

How does the Hummer compare? Of course everyone knows that the hummer is cleaner overall on the environment than the Prius. ;)

It's interesting that two of the primary market competitors of the Prius, the 2010 Insight and the Ford Fusion, put out an order of magnitude more pollutants than the new Prius.

CARB does not test Hummer because of the weight reasons I believe.

Yup. It's over the weight limit for a personal vehicle.

Thanks for the info. What surprises me is that the emissions are so low while both the mpg and horsepower increased on the 2010 Prius. It truely is close to being unbelieveable. I guess it just takes a proper mind set to create such a phenomenal vehicle.

LoL about the STi as well :) that was actually one of the other cars I was looking at so it makes me feel better that I did go with the Prius vs STi.

The emission output will double when the car runs at full boost :) It's a different kind of car, get whatever that fits the driver better

Just think how much better off the world would be if the Prius (or its equivalent) was the only car you could buy. There would be no dependence on Middle East oil, hence no strategic reason to spend trillions over there trying to change governments (it really is all about oil). And maybe we would stand a chance in controlling carbon emissions. I'm not terribly optimistic...

    Re: Emission Comparison: Prius / HS250h / Insight / Civic Hybrid / Jetta (Gas+TDI) / WRX STIH

I added Chevy Volt to the comparison. Volt did not even qualify for SULEV. It got ULEV.

I added evaporative emission chart to compare. TDI does not have data for it. I am not sure if it is too low to report or they did't test it.

    Nice! Thanks for posting.
The outlier vehicle makes it hard to see difference in the other cars though.

Do you have Prius '10 vs Prius '04-'09 ?

I imagine it means below limit of detection.
