In todays add in the newspapper I noticed Sunnyvale Toyota in Sunnyvale, CA is offering discounts of $150 off the Prius ll, $250 off the Prius lll and $350 off Prius V. They claim to have 99 of the Prius 2010 modles in stock.

Is that off MSRP or as some have experienced they are seeing a discount over a marked up MSRP

yeah, a lot of dealers will give you dollars off MSRP, to only inflate the cost of floor mats and other options that they made mandatory, or they slap on their arbitrary dealers fees that can be a few thousand dollars. The only price that matters it the Out The Door price.

They most certainly do not have 99 in stock.

The 99 number is probably baseless, as is most sales "puffing," but dealers typically inflate their inventory by including the inventory of other dealers in the region (with whom they've got exchange deals).

For example, there are 4 dealers in my region. Each website lists the exact same 28 Gen IIIs as "in stock" inventory.

The new car inventory for Sunnyvale Toyota lists 29 New Prius vehicles. 27 are 2010's, the remaining two are 2009's.

    Discounts? Maybe - it's possible - depending

Guys, we're all free to set pricing above or below MSRP.
Once Toyota invoices us for a car, it's up to us to follow the market.

I have been selling at MSRP but there are many surrounding me who are not, and are adding markups, junk to cars, and fluff options they do themselves.

I also have cars I am happy to sell at a small discount off MSRP at a certain point in time, like let's say I have 5 red package IV with NAV suddenly that are here, with every other color around them already selling with deposits. Or, if I have 4 package III's in red with NAV or even 4 silver cars in IV -- I'm sure you get my point.

If sitting on duplicates that are not already sold works against me being able to better myself on a future allocation, what's a hundred or two - or even a few hundred to get the car out of here and into your driveway, and have a sold unit I can replace with perhaps a better color for us retail like gray or pearl white or black?

Some dealerships with smaller allocations cannot think this way - it's not profitable enough, and not all are driven by progress... some do things very differently. I'd sooner discount a II than a IV or V - they are selling like crazy with deposits rolling in quick - especially for sunroof cars... but hey - reach me if you want a red NAV car (LOL) because I bet I can put a huge smile on your face right now. and a little savings in your wallet. I can't say that's do-able in 2-3 days, but hey, while the supply's great, if you wanna red car..............

    Trade-In Key Factor

Since the most of the 2010 models were not in stock at any of the dealers, I assumed that they would sell for MSRP.

So the key to getting a "good deal" was to see who would give me the most for my '07 Prius.

In a few months that low stock scenario will change, and I fully expect discounts on 2010s to be the norm.

Sunnyvale Toyota is legit. They have a long standing policy of selling no cars over MSRP and no port addons unless explicitly requested by the customer.

When other dealers were asking $5000K over MSRP in the bay area in June of last year, Sunnyvale was selling them for $150 MSRP. Granted, they had a 10 week waiting list with 400 people on it, but their allocation is the largest in the country with over 150 a month.

No I don't work for them. I do know a bunch of people locally who've bought from them. Of the 25 prius's in our parking lot, 10 of them were bought from Sunnyvale Toyota.

I purchased mine from Toyota of Palo Alto, which is one of the two closest dealers to Sunnyvale and probably one of their biggest competitors (since both are in the heart of Silicon Valley -- prime Prius country).

After my deal was all finished and I'd been handed the keys, I asked my sales guy how well they were selling. He told me that every 2010 Prius they get that isn't already promised to someone sells within two days.

Sunnyvale & Palo Alto are probably doing similar business, and my sales guy seemed to be honest and straight-up, and really didn't have much of an incentive to lie or stretch the truth since our deal was finished.

So if the Palo Alto sales rate translates well to the Sunnyvale sales rate, and if Codyroo's numbers are accurate, most of those cars they advertised will probably be gone really soon.

All that being said, I'm getting the sense from reading these boards that the 2010 is a hot seller, but not as hot as the Gen2 was since lots of people seem to be getting cars a lot sooner than they expected.

So maybe it makes sense for Sunnyvale Toyota to be the first dealer to blink and offer a small discount. They're the biggest in the region, so maybe they want to keep their sales volume up and grab as many customers as quickly as possible.

Yep. I bought my Prius from them.

Back when I put down my deposit for mine in late 05 w/them the waits were >1 month and MSRP was an ok deal. I got mine for a little under MSRP since they offered special pricing to people who work for my employer.

Count me as a satisfied customer and I wouldn't hesitate going there again if I were in the market for another Toyota.

    +1

I've purchased many cars in my day, and the buying experience with Toyota Sunnyvale was the best of any.
