For what it's worth I went to the dealer asking for a Prius oil filter today and he gave me a YZZF1.

Swanny, comparing the YZZF1 to the YZZF2 is a different story than comparing to the 10004. In addition, I went to the dealer once for a different car (I think it was my mr2) and he gave me a different filter saying they redesigned the filter and I should use the YZZF2 instead. Of course at the same stop, I asked the dealer for a filter for my MR2 Turbo and he gave me a YZZF1 for that as well.

It would be very expensive for Toyota if they built filters with totally different designs; both to manufacture and to repair busted engines after someone accidentally installed the wrong filter.

Just think how many oil filters Toyota sells per day. Now if they could even save 5 cents per filter, think about how much money that would save them. Toyota is where they are today because they analyze every cent and have been very successful at building flexible assembly lines.

The reason for the larger (longer or diameter) filters should be to allow more oil to pass through and be filtered in a shorter time. Larger filter sizes allow for faster movement of oil. I'm using my old F2 filters until they're gone, then I'll buy the F1s. One reason -it's my engine!? Hope this helps...

If you check the WIX cross reference site, you can see that the specs for the equivalent wix filters of yzzf1 and yzzf2 have the same bypass pressure, same flow rating , diameter etc etc. The only difference I see is the length measurement. Other than length, the two WIX substitutes are identical so I think the length must be the only difference in the two Toyota filters. I am using the YZZF1 for my 2007 Camry Hybrid and my 2009 Prius.

I enjoyed reading your post. Thanks for writing it.

According to the book with filter specs located in the aisle at AutoZone, the M1-103 oil filter by Mobil 1 is spec'ed for my 2006 Toyota Camry (non-hybrid). The OEM filter spec'ed for my Camry is the Denso / Toyota 90915-YZZF1 . So since the short-length M1-103 is spec'd for the Prius, then I would suppose the larger YZZF1 would be just as suitable for the Prius as the smaller, officially spec'ed OEM YZZF2 :)

I might try out your idea of using the larger Mobil 1 M1-209 oil filter for my Camry. Thanks for mentioning it.

Sorry, forgot to ask: Is there an online source where you found out that the M1-209 has the same bypass valve PSI and anti-drainback valve PSI as the YZZF2/F1 ? If you didn't use an online source, did you simply call Mobil's toll-free support line for their oil filters, which is shown on Mobil's web site? Thanks again.

Would the longer filter extend too low to risk hitting something sticking up on the road?

No, it is only around 1/2" longer. I don't think there's any practical difference whether the longer filter is used or not, given the tiny difference in filter capacity.

I use the correct -F2 filter, but if you wish to use the slightly longer -F1 filter, peace.

The one dealer oil change I had put on the longer filter. Surprised me when I compared the old with the new.

I took a look at the very large Mobil 1 M1-209 filter today. This thing looks much bigger than the M1-103 and the OEM YZZF1, but what concerns me is the diameter of the round gasket of the Mobil M1-209 is significantly greater (wider) than the diameter of the spec'ed M1-103 and the spec'ed OEM YZZF1. I mean if you hold the gasket of the M1-209 up against the gasket of the OEM YZZF1, the YZZF1's gasket might just barely overlap the M1-209's gasket. In other words, the outer perimeter of the YZZF1 gasket just barely touches the inner perimeter of the M1-209 gasket--but just barely. Is the M1-209 safe to use in this situation? Isn't there a higher chance of springing an oil leak? The gaskets are not the same size.

    Sort of on topic//maybe//

My K:rolleyes:ohler engine on my lawnmower crosses to a Toyota filter which is %75 chaper than a Kohler filter.

Although the machined area that the oil filter gasket contacts is pretty wide, I agree that (unless you have an emergency situation) it seems pointless to knowingly purchase and install a filter of the wrong size. Also, a wider filter means less space between the filter and the semi-circular housing that is adjacent, thus making the used filter harder to remove.

I just changed the oil on my 06 yesterday at 100K miles and I was thinking of switching over the the longer 90915-YZZF1 filter next time in order to make it easier to fit my channel lock pliers around the filter for removal. As it is now with the standard filter I can barely get the pliers on the filter body to twist it loose. (I know I could buy a 65mm 14 flute oil filter wrench for about $5, but money is tight).
For those who have switched over to the longer filter, have you found that the longer length of it makes it easier to remove the filter? Thanks! :)

Does anyone know the difference between 90915-YZZF2 and 90915-YZZE1.

I just got a filter from my local Toyota dealer a few weeks ago and it's 90915-YZZE1. It's not the longer size, I believe it's the same size as the standard 90915-YZZF2 that others have mentioned here. Does anyone know why Toyota are using a different part number here. Is this an Australia thing?

FYI, my toyota dealer uses this filter on my prius.
