G III rear seat headroom

I estimate one more inch of rear headroom in the Gen3 over Gen2, so it might be tight for them, but you'd have to try. It still has kammback shape for low Cd.

In a small Toyota 5-door, the other options would be a Matrix, Rav4, or Scion xB

 

Maybe congrats are in order. I've never seen a teenage boy sit up straight.

On a more serious note, I'm 6' 1 1/2" I've always sat in the back seat of a car to test them and few mid size cars have enough headroom to sit up straight in. Even a lot of the front seats lack that amount of headroom. I try now though to sit relaxed knowing that I seldom would actually sit in a seat like I sit when I test the headroom. Once I settle in I seem to have a lot more headroom.

To me (my son was 6'4") I was always more concerned with leg room. Could he sit back there and still find room for his legs was the concern. Thus I started driving SUV's several years ago. (BTW, I find the Highlander Hybrid to have one of the more comfortable second row seating of the mid size SUV's).

I crammed my kids into the back of an Explorer and 4Runner for years and then after listening to my wife complain so much I told her to drive one day and I climbed into the back of the 4Runner. I traded it the next week for a Sequoia.

If you are concerned about infrequent travel or short trips I think a teen is pretty flexible. If though you take long trips and spend a lot of family time in a car I would want the second row to be comfortable. I've not had the Prius yet, but my experience with the TCH is that it was adequate for comfort for reasonably tall people. The Prius is supposed to be comparable, except maybe a tad more narrow which is not an issue for just 2 people in the back.

Oh, has he quit growing? My 6'1 10th grader became a 6'4 senior many years ago. He may grow faster than your next planned trade-in

I'm 6'4" and have a tall torso (perhaps the worst-case scenario for headroom issues) and I think the headroom is just fine in the 2010 Prius. I have to slouch a little in the 2008 backseat.

As far as legroom, I find both the 2008 we have and the 2010 I've tested to have great legroom, even more than some SUV's. We were "upgraded" from a compact to a Jeep Commander (like a Hummer) over Christmas. The back seat (middle row) had less legroom than our Prius, I kid you not!

 

I'm 6'2" and I was able to fit behind the driver seat. I found there was plenty of legroom and headroom (unlike the 2010 Honda Insight). I don't have the car yet but have taken it on two test drives so far.

 

You must find a way to check it out yourself. Are they still growing? My husband is 6'2" and he always tries on a car for headroom. He has a long torso. I am 5'10.5" and I always have to try on the legroom. On some cars I can't hit the brake due to steering wheel interference. Even at my shorter height, my legs are longer than his.

There is just no way to guess.

I put a 6"1" kid in the back of my ol' Gen II and he is sort of wormed around, is so glad to have a ride rather than take school bus he doesn't care. 30 mile ride.

He hasn't been in the Gen III yet.

Just tried it out. It was a bit of a disappointment. The headroom is slightly better than the Gen II, which was not much. Sitting upright, my head would slightly touch the roof. Leg room is ok. I am 1 m 85, sorry, 6' 1" and have an average torso height.
