    You have a 2002 Prius, it's not near the 2004 - 2009 and the 2010 runs rings around it. Poor comparison.
    Have you tested a 2010 Prius? Try it, I bet you like it.

    First off, we are comapring Prius to VWTJetta-tdi, so you are not making any sense here, and for the rest, if you like the Prius like I do then please try to compare them with other hybrids and within its terrain of strentgh, I feel that hybrid have a place where they outshine some of the other cars (not all, including the TDI)


    But if we continue with the thread and comparisson, please stay away from any VW-TDI, Prius will always be in a lose lose situation, the post says the VROOOM VROOM against the vhoooosssssh, if you get to close to a TDI, just the sounds of it, sound like a real car, when you get close to a Prius it sounds like sissy sound, so basically even with the sound the Prius will lose.

    I use my Prius for erand around the city, and I use my TDI for long drives on the HWY where going up the hill is a cake walk for the TDI, I climb pretty much anything on 5th gear, so you can feel the ball of the TDI car, if I take my whimpy prius I would be down shifting like crazy and no guts, bottom line, for the rest of you that have not driven a TDI please jump in one and your comments will differ from what you have expressed so far guaranteed..

    Thooo, we are discussing TDI vs. Prius on this forum right?.

    The way I see it, you guys are here just to flat out to deny how good a TDI-real car is compared to a Prius, it does not matter what kind of evidence I show to you guys, you will find any kind of excuses to protect the integrity of the Prius and you will always think that the Pius is the winner, so your responses have been very bias towards the Prius.

    About MPG's (you guys do not even realize that what you read off from the Pius comp about MPG is way off, do a real calculation) so that is why you are always getting 57 to 60 mpgs (it is good that you guys continue to dream though on the good mpgs) but the reality of it is that the TDI is a way better car overall.

    Actually the EPA has repeatedly shown the Jetta TDI has rubbish mileage. So too have the European testing agencies. So would you like to put a little wager up for a driving contest?

    We'll find someone in your area with a 2010 Prius and map out a circular interstate route and an urban route. Proposed Rules:
    • both vehicles top-off at the same station
    • each vehicle carries an umpire from the other team
    • vehicles must remain within eyesight unless traffic conditions dictate otherwise
    • toss a coin and one leads for 20 minutes with the other following
    • second loop, lead vehicle swaps for 20 minutes with the other following
    • pull off and top off the tanks and average the distance
    • repeat at different, legal speeds
    At first I was thinking what to wager but the pink slips would leave the winner with a 'piece of junk.' So perhaps $250 each, enough to cover all fuel, and give each umpire $100. The rest goes to the winner.

    So what do you say, do you feel lucky?

    The difference between my manual calculations and the MFG calculation is 1.3%.

    Trip Computer MPG ------- 49.2
    Manual Calculation MPG -- 48.5

    I suspect much of that difference is due to the time the Prius dumped a bunch of gasoline on the ground due to me overfilling the fuel bladder.

    Whether the TDI or Prius is better is determined by what criteria are most important to an individual. Based on your criteria the TDI may be a much better car. For many the Prius is better.

    I prefer my 2003 TDI to my 2005 Prius due to:
    • More comfortable driving position
    • Better interior materials
    • More cargo area (I have the wagon)
    • For fun to drive (In the traditional going around corners sense)
    However the Prius is the hands down winner on a cost / mile basis

    Toyota needs to come out with a KO on the TDI commercial, instead of the flower children jazz.

    TDI vs prius. IT's been beaten to death. Ok the TDI is most likely more fun to drive, especially around curves, is a bit more peppy. It's a nice Car no doubt.

    the prius owns it in economy and overall tech, not to mention much cleaner pollultion wise. And the 2010 interior is vastly improved over previous prius, so TDI interor vs 2010..to close to call..both are fantastic.

    both are fine cars for different drivers.

    it's like ford vs chevy, the debate will never end!

    if you want a fun little great MPG car, the


    they get up to 50+mpg. Since FIAT/Chrysler team up, hopefully they will start importing or building some of these stateside.

    On the commercial quoting higher mpgs ;

    The current EPA mpg ratings are off by as much as -25.8 % low on light duty diesels . This is directly from the EPA .

    And the current rating on average of Hybrids is stll high compared to real world , high above real world by as much as +9 % . The old lables on Hybrids were off as much high above real world by +18 % .

    they wouldn't let me post the url yet .........but I will to the epa site that the above quote comes from .

    So the US EPA mpg rating on the current TDI along with all other light duty diesels are on average 25.8 % low . Making the current EPA rating pretty much useless for comparison of mpgs for auto Diesels to everything else in general .

    Just as the current Hybrid rating is useless for real world comparison as their rating numbers are 8-12 % high above real world .

    The actual mpg (US) are from the German VW website , EU figures ;

    Jetta V 2.0 L DPF 103kw ~ 140 hp / 236 lb-ft 6 spd man.

    (urban/highway/extraUrban)L/100km ;

    ( 7.1 , 4.5 , 5.4 ) L/100km ~ ( 33.1 , 52.3 , 43.6 mpgUS )

    Jetta V 2.0 L DPF 103kw ~ 140 hp / 236 lb-ft DSG 6 spd ,

    ( 7.6 , 4.8 , 5.8 ) L/100km ~ ( 30.9 , 49.0 , 40.6 mpgUS )

    The actual observed by most of the new TDIs is in the range of high 30s to low 40s city / mid 40s to low 50s highway mpg (US) .

    While in the real world of 70-80 mph highways most Prius can barely break out of the high 30s to low 40s mpg (US) once any distance is traveled .

    Then throw in effort to maximize mpgs on city routes the TDIs ( these TDIs sold now in the US ) can be more fuel efficient than on highway routes .

    IF we had any of the options like the BlueMotion TDIs sold in Europe "TODAY" this argument would be mute as the Hybrids would be shown for the useless clowns they really are .

    When the 25.8 % error is figured in the current posted mpg ratings they almost matches to a "T" the EU figures ;

    Adjusted EPA #'s ~(37.74 city / 52.4 highway / 44.03 Extra Urban)

    EU #'s.................. ( 33,1 city / 52.3 highway / 43.6 Extra Urban )

    I have a girlfiiend in southern CA that has a two year old Prius . She is lucky to break 40 mpgs running around the inland emprie . I last fall achieved mid 50s mpgs over the same routes in a TDI .

    If the government allows the most fuel efficient BlueMotions & similar over the here the current hybrid fad will die a quick death ........

    going 80mph I can net about 44.5 mpg over 150 miles. If you slow down to 69MPH it increases by nearly 40%.

    I have trouble believing the TDI does anybetter than the prius at 80MPH

    90MPH on the other hand kills mpg, I did a 60 mile trip down SR-154 which is roughly 60 mile stretch, not well traveled. My mpg was like @ 35mpg avg lol. Still no bad at all though

    I drove the Jetta TDI wagon today. It is $2k more than the Sedan which was sold so I couldn't drive it.

    Pleather looks good but the rest of the plastic stuffs are worse than my Prius. They are not soft to the touch and buttons and knots are too cheap. Overall, the interior feel is nice.

    Handling feels more solid than my 06 Prius. I drove a mile in city and 6 miles on the highway. Disruption in the power is really annoying. DSG in automatic mode is very smooth to upshift but downshift lags. I had that "pray to get to the right gear" moment when I tried to pass. When it does shift, it is jerky. I guess Prius' eCVT spoiled me. I have come to a new kind of appreciation for the smoothness and consistent power delivery from hybrid synergy drive.

    So I went to DSG manual shift mode and stayed at 4th gear. The power response was good in this gear but the engine revs at 3k RPM. I tried to stay in 5th gear and floored it (not much travel needed in the pedal). The car accelerated slowly.

    I did not notice any difference with the Sport "S" gear.

    The engine sounds smooth during idling but not as quiet as gas engine and I hear some diesel clank in the mix. Vroom, Vrooooom, Vrooooooom was annoying as hell! The pitch goes up slow and then drops then creep up slowly again... like a bee flying around my head.

    The overall MPG at the end of the trip was 36 MPG with the A/C on. The saleman put the A/C to low probably to make the car more powerful. After I set it to coldest and twisted fan knot to #4 position, I can feel the acceleration weaker. Gotta love the electric A/C in the Prius.

    Toyota dealers here don't have the new Prius yet for me to compare. I know it feels more solid from what I heard from the new owners.

    From today's test drive, I would still pick the Prius over Jetta TDI wagon due to the issues listed above.

    So is this everyone from the VW forum or are you guys still recruiting members to troll on this site? :D

    BTW, I just got home from work and with 133mile on the trip (Saturday commute) I averaged 52.8mpg at 65mph with no hypermiling or drafting tricks. Man my Prius sucks on the freeway. Maybe I should have turned the music down and the headlights off to save energy and I could have nailed 53mpg. :rolleyes:

    Bait and switch. I was responding to your inquiry: "...please watch and tell me what you think about this video...".

    This video is from one of at least two series by someone who was going after hybrids in general, though selecting Prius as the biggest and easiest target. A video that asks:
    "...two cars wrestling for the bragging rights for the best miles per gallon,"
    "Jetta TDI vs. Hybrid",
    "that is what this is all about at Auburn Volkswagon, is to see how many miles you can go on a tank of fuel."

    I pointed out that, among other serious problems with this video, the Civic was a better hybrid for this specific and nonscientific challenge.

    So you switch.

    And you?

    Based on another post about how you would be downshifting your 2002 Prius IV with Solar Cells, I'm not expecting an honest answer.

    The worst part about trolling is that it makes the troll's site of origin look bad and that is unfortunate because from what I've read on the TDI forums, many of the members there are pretty rational and seem like pretty good people. :(

    I'd ask that we at PC not judge other VW owners because of the actions of a few of the very vocal and uninformed people that choose to come here and post nonsense. :)

    I'd rather be caught dead in a Honda Civic/CRX or an Acura Integra than a VW, hell even a Hyundai. I don't support state-owned car companies, nor do I support car companies started by war-mongers.

    If I own a diesel, it must sound like a diesel. Not like a Honda B/H series engine that's been riced out to death about to grenade(TDI).

    Oh, man, the TDI trolls are out in force!

    My total MFD error as of 8,900 miles is a whopping +0.87% with respect to mileage. The cumulative error is still within the variability of any given fill. My average mileage has been 48.00 mpg calculated and is rising rapidly. (Lowest tank out of the last five was 51.7.)

    Had an interesting drive yesterday and today, a little over 52 mpg on the interstate at 72 mpg cruise in both directions for ~350 miles with AC on with 4 occupants one way, three the other with some luggage. That was with no substantial winds. Then some nasty cross winds began a few miles after a fill: the next 100 miles were 20 mph sustained winds, directly perpendicular, with gusts in the mid 20's--basis was weather station logs along the route. Mileage "plummeted" to 46.3 mpg for this leg at the same cruise speed...still exceeding the EPA sticker.
