Where to place radar detector and power cord?

If radar detectors are banned where you live watch out. Police use confiscated radar detectors to make radar detector detectors.
Of course if you are vigilant and stick to or below the limit you have no need for a radar detector. Here there are fixed speed detectors at traffic light, these aren't detectable but they can be points of interest on a GPS.

 

I have upgraded to POP mode. There is no problem with a cord with the installation I described, since the cord is under the headliner.

Glad to see that other people see the need for counterintelligence :spy: on the (always honest radar operators, Ha Ha).

 

:spider: The V1 does not emit RF noise that can be picked up by other detectors or the official Detector Detector units. There are very few of these non=emitting detectors on the market. The V1 can be used without fear of Discovery as long as it can be installed with stealth in the passenger cabin. That is what I am trying to do with the installation I use. the display is down low so it cant be seen with the upper display muted.

 

For the first year I had Pearl I used my V1 in the car. I just placed my V1 in the cupboard in the house. It's -VERY- stealthy there. The only thing it told me was where the radar was that I shouldn't be concerned about and where the automatic door openers were (they use microwaves in the X band).

I don't speed with Pearl. Radar detectors are legal in western Canada, but if an officer sees one in use in a car they will look closely for some other violations. The thinking is you are being sneaky for SOME reason. But I was never stopped. I don't speed. Try it sometime. The police will leave you alone.

 

Maybe in Canada, not in the areas of the U.S. I have lived. They figure you are up to something if you are moving near the speed limit. Even had one slow down checking me out while I was slow gliding in toward the subdivision with the Prius a few days ago. It was at night and I wondered why the oncoming driver was stopping. He was set to turn around when I signalled into the subdivision...so he restarted and went on.

And if you have out of state plates and are driving a major North-South route at right around the speed limit, they really like to find an excuse to pull you over. Driving 85th percentile they never seem to bother me.

 

I had a member of our lovely SDPD stop me this morning for doing, get this....55 in a 55 He told me even though the limit is 55, traffic is moving at around 65-70 and i should follow it to avoid obstructing traffic.

If anyone knows the area, this was on the 163 that goes into downtown, 2 lanes each direction. Not exactly safe to be goin quick on that road.

The southernmost 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) of Route 163, where it passes through Balboa Park and under the Cabrillo Bridge is one of the most scenic freeways in the country.

 

I think you will find after a while you will stop using your radar detector and will just get rid of it. I know very few people that speed in their Prius and therefore no longer have a need for the device.

I know I stopped using mine almost immediately after getting my Prius. I was always a led foot before my Prius and have totally changed my driving habits. Never had a ticket before, so I guess I was just lucky, but now the thought of speeding is just well, not even a thought because it ruins my MPG.

Let us know if you stop using yours as well.

I have 1 co-worker that has a Prius, she had hers before me, and she is still a ledfoot and has not really gotten into the MPG thing, so when she was caught speeding on a trip to Ohio, the cop that pulled her over wrote in big letters on her ticket "Speeding 21 MPH over the limit in a PRIUS"
and he capitalized PRIUS and underlined it and put exclamation points after it.. I think he was actually shocked to see someone speeding in a Prius. I thought it was kind of funny, and told her that she could buy my radar detector from me

 

Speakin of that, anyone want to buy a radar detector...only used for a week. BO

 

Don't you need it to warn you so that you can speed up for the SDPD?

Edit: I'll add that one thing I do need the V1 for in the Prius is downhill glides. This area has a lot of hills/ridges and elevation change with few flat stretches. As long as there is no patrolman to ruin my glide I take advantage of the downhill so that I can carry momentum into the next climb. Letting gravity work for me can easily put me 15 over and it's all free.

Got my Escort 8500x50 velcro'd the same way on a Prius hood. Hood is recomended.

 

My radar detector fits perfectly in the translucent compartment under the radio and the door closes against it keeping it perfectly in place with the LED readable through the black plastic.

 

OMG that couldnt be any more true.
I used to have a radar detector, and made it a requirement to always have it since it has paid for itself time after time in previous cars.
When I got in the prius, I noticed that I couldnt mount it anywhere either, so I left it out for a little bit while I saved up for a wireless one.
A year later, I noticed that "oh ya, I forgot to get that" but by then I realized I had no need of it at all, because now: MPG > speed.
I went from around 8 tickets a year to 1. The prius is a "record cleaner"
Funny thing was, the first time I got my licence suspended, the judge said that I was one of the few people he knew who's driving record needed a scroll bar.

 

Yes no matter where I put in on the windshield it seemed to block vision and the front vision is not that great to begin with given the size of the A pillars. But its quite nice there velcro'ed on my eBay hood. After I saw the picture I posted I realized I needed to trim back alot of the velcro that extended beyond the detector. It looks alot better now.I have the mini dash mat velcro'ed to the ebay hood to. Its pretty nice.

 

I don't speed so I don't need a radar detector. Speed kills (mileage).

 

The only time I would need a detector would be going down this particular hill. If anyone is familiar with the SD area, the 163 going south from Kearny Mesa, the long hill that goes into Fashion Valley. Start out at my 65mph cruise let it go, at the bottom i'm at 75+.

I don't speed as much with my 07 Prius (it's the mpg gig), but there are times when I do, so my Escort is always ready and armed.

 

I saw some people put their radar detector up on the windsheild and some bottom. tell me the best location to put one to avoid police detection and better reception.

 

Generally people mount them high, mainly because it's more hidden and Radar detection improves quite a bit. Mounting low is better for Lidar/laser detection, but pretty much unless you have laser jammers and veil installed in your car you are toast when you get tagged by laser. Unless you are following behind another faster moving car, and he gets tagged first then you get laser scatter picked up in the rader/laser detector..it will give you enough warning time.

POP isn't a big worry, it can't be used in court, look it up. Most police don't bother with pop anyway, so it's best to leave it off on the detector. On certrain units, from Beltronic to V1, leaving POP detection on also decrease overall senstivity.

mount it high or low it's up to you, if you know laser is used heavily in your area then use low mount, otherwise high all the way, and get a direct wire kit to the fuse box.

I have a Whistler XTR 695, very good detector..out performs Escort 8500 in some reviews. Cops around here mainly run Ka and k. Laser use seems to becoming a bit more common. I'm thinking of getting a laser shifter and the VEIL coating for the lights etc. The stuff WORKS, and is perfectly legal. Lasers are mandated by the FDA.

do I speed? not often, I genrally go 5-10 over though. It's also nice to know when the Fuzz is out and about even when going the limit. It's quite entertaining, especially on long road trips.
