I had made some comments about Sandy Beach Metallic in another thread based on what I had seen on other cars at the dealer (thought it was a little bland and dated). Now I realize I was probably looking at Desert Sand Mica, not Sandy Beach Metallic. Hey, desert/beach ... sand is sand! :p

The color I saw at the dealer looked pretty similiar to the pictures I've seen of the Prius in Sandy Beach but I know they must be different. Is Sandy Beach brighter/more golden than Desert Sand?

Yep, you're right, sand is sand.

The difference between desert and beach sand.
The beach is near where I live, don't look too close, down the far end it's a nude beach!

Well, they must have been basing Desert Sand on a different desert because it certainly doesn't look anything like your picture!

I looked close but didn't see the nudes.

difference? The $220 extra you pay for the "special paint" Sandy Beach. At least that's what SET adds on. What a rip off, paint is paint.

I thought the $220 extra was only for Blizzard Pearl?

Correct. Blizzard Pearl is extra because it is 3 different paints.

$220 for pearl is a bargain!!!
Some car companies charge $1400 for pearl paint in Australia.

Anybody have any photos of the two colors side-by-side? Since I have yet to see any 2010 Prius (we are deprived here) and any of the new colors - except blizzard pearl, which I saw on a Highlander, and blue ribbon metallic, I have to rely on my imagination comparing them to what currently exists.

Desert Sand is quite light. Sandy Beach takes it one step further. Desert Sand has a stronger gold look to it (without actually looking gold like our Driftwood Pearl).

Sorry I couldn't find two outdoor pics.

Thanks for the pics, Tideland. However, I was a little confused. You say that Desert Sand has a stronger gold look, but the pictures seem to show Sandy Beach as being more gold - or rather, the Desert Sand looks like a grey beige while the Sandy Beach looks more of a tan beige. It's probably the lighting.

I guess imo, gold is a darker beige. The Sandy Beach is more beige, yes and lighter too. I was hoping the use of the word gold would help visualize a richer, darker beige (relatively speaking of course as you can see in the pic, it's still light beige). Anyway, the point is that Sandy Beach is a lot lighter and more beige than Desert Sand.

Stumbled across a driftwood in a parking lot today. Here are side by sides, same light, but with just an iphone camera:

Thanks - that picture of the two of them together really shows the differences in shape. There's actually less difference than I thought.

The beach paint is different from the desert because of the mural of girls playing volleyball all over the car.

Okay, I'll look out for them. But I think I prefer being able to see Lawrence of Arabia in the reflected mirage of the desert.
