I just checked Trailer hitch, hitches and bike rack (800)298-8924 and they do not have a hitch yet for the 2010 (I didn't think they would). I wonder how long it will take a manufacturer to make one for the 2010. With the summer here I want to be able to enjoy my Prius and my bike.

Coastal Tech was one of the first to make the hitches for the Gen 1 and Gen2. Let's see if they do it again for the 2010.

Note - most of us use the hitches for hitch mounted carriers, not for towing.

Going to be a bit more difficult with all the underbody panels at the rear.

yeah, i don't use mine for towing. just a bike rack. also, it is great protection for parking in the city with a ball back there.

:) Has anyone ever used it for those hitch carriers? I am a first time Prius owner, will be here this Thursday, and want it for not only bikes, but a carrrier.

Over here in the Netherlands Toyota simply doesn't allow to use the Prius for towing, so there are no hitches with a ball available for the Prius 2009 etc. You can get a hitch with a rectangular piece of steel instead of the ball, and a special bike rack for that hitch.

Thule has made what appears to be an excellent solution for European cyclists, the Thule Euroclick. This is their website:

    Thule EuroClick - Home

This is a Youtube video of the Euroclick being used - very elegant solution. Unfortunately, Thule sent email to me indicating that it will not be available in the US because of different trailer hitch design. Here's the Youtube.com video:

A little Google searching tells me there are now three 1.25" square receiver hitches for the 2010 Prius:

    • Draw-Tite 24847
    • Curt 11469
    • Hidden Hitch 60263
These are in stock at etrailer.com, amazon.com, and many other dealers.

Why get a 1.25 when you can get a more durable Class III 2" for the same price (Google Quality S hitch).

That's Toyota's line here too. What people do after they buy the car is up to them though. (It may void parts of the warranty if they think you're overloading the engine or suspension).

You can get a ball attachment for a 2" square receiver if you want to tow a light trailer (cautiously, of course), not sure if they're available in other sizes (I assume you have the equivalent in metric, that's about 5 cm).

Don't know why this was brought up from the dead. But, there are 1.25" and 2" hitches on the market now. Thanks for the info though RichPasco, I am sure somebody can use it.

I take it from these comments that my hitch from my 2006 is not going to fit my 2012? So where do I find one for my 2012 GenIII, and the wiring?

I drove my 2006 all over the country towing a small trailer with no harm. Had Toyota check all fluids after and they told me that there was no need to change any. I had already changed the motor oil. The weight was over 830lbs but only by 300 lbs. Gas mileage was 38mpg for over a 13,000 mile trip up and down mountains, you name it. Just use common sense and you’ll be fine.

I'm having troubles finding anyone in the US to ship a towbar to Australia. Seems no one cares about a sale.

Often I find myself in the same predicament with regards to shipping items and I am in the US. Must be an island thing? I don't know if anyone makes them in Japan but it might be easier to get one from there?

Not in Japan. Checked Yahoo auctions and Japanese in general don't tow anyway.

Can't help with shipping, but I just installed the Curt 1.25" hitch last night. The only problem I had was my wrench extension wasn't long enough, so I had to improvise. You'll need a ratchet, a 6" extension (at least), and 17mm and 19mm sockets. It's a little clumsy, but with just a bit of patience, it's not too bad. Be sure to wait for the muffler to cool down, though. Four bolts out, position the hitch, four bolts in and you're done. Lining them up is a bit of a pain, but doable. The hitch is high quality and fits perfectly.

Was looking for the smaller 1 1/4" hitch.

I ended up getting Thule roof racks for about the same price as a fellow Aussie buying the Curt towbar a few years back when the exchange rate for A$ wasn't as strong. Although I am still quite weary of putting anything heavy up there with the solar panels up there.

I have bikes I want to carry and ride weekly and my wife and I don't have the lightest of all bikes once fully loaded with accessories. Mine is probably 13kg, her's I am targetting (haven't bought yet) at around 11kg.
