The Gen III Prius is now available in 10 configurations that many have expressed dissatisfaction with. Doug of Prius Team has challenged us to come up with another list. Below is my list, modified from the original list. Please express your approval or suggest changes. Keep in mind that any suggested changes must still result in a total of 10 configurations, so if, for example, you say that you want a Prius II with the option of Nav, that would add a new configuration, so you would have to say which of the other configs you would eliminate.

In my list, my rationale for changes is as follows: Anyone who will pay for an upgraded audio system will want other advanced features (thus eliminating old Prius III) but not necessarily Leather. ATP now available without 17" wheels. Solar roof available without Nav. I did not include 17" wheels with Solar Roof, even though people want that, because we are still told that it is not possible.

Here is my first attempt at a list:

    1: Prius II
    as detailed elsewhere

2: Prius III (All features of old III and IV except leather, heated seats & power lumbar support)
In addition to Prius II features:
► JBL AM/FM/MP3 six-disc CD changer with eight speakers
    ► Integrated satellite radio capability
► Hands-free phone capability via Bluetooth® wireless technology.:
    ► Three-door Smart Key system
► Driver and front passenger water repellant windows
    ► Plasmacluster™ ionizer
► Auto dimming mirror with HomeLink®

3: Prius III with Solar Roof Package

    4: Prius IV
In addition to Prius III features:
    ► Leather-trimmed interior
► Heated front seats with driver lumbar support

5: Prius IV with Navigation Package

6: Prius IV with Solar Roof Package

7: Prius IV with Navigation Package & Solar Roof Package

8: Prius IV with Solar Roof Package & Advanced Technology Package (inc Nav)
► LED headlamps with auto leveling and washers
    ► Integrated foglamps

    9: Prius V
In addition to Prius IV features:
    ► 17-inch alloy wheels and P215/45 R17 tires
► LED headlamps with auto leveling and washers
    ► Integrated foglamps
    Navigation Package

10: Prius V with Advanced Technology Package (includes Nav)

    Optional Equipment

Navigation Package Available on Prius III, IV, V
Voice-actived touch-screen DVD navigation system with
JBL AM/FM/MP3 four-disc CD changer, eight speakers, integrated
satellite radio capability, XM NavTraffic capability, hands-free
phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth wireless
    technology and integrated backup camera

Solar Roof Package Available on Prius IV
Power tilt/slide moonroof with Solar Powered Ventilation System
    and Remote Air Conditioning System

Advanced Technology Package Available on Prius IV, V
    Includes Navigation Package equipment
plus Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
    Pre-Collision System (PCS)
    Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
    Intelligent Parking Assist (IPA)

I want a Prius IV with sunroof, no nav - OP's config #6. I don't even want the solar roof, but I realize that's asking far too much. At this point I will either buy a plain IV or wait until I can get config #6 above.

All I would have liked to see would be:

    Prius V
Same as now but turn signal mirrors made their way into the Prius V since it is the top model.

Included with the advanced tech package, the HUD should be part of it along with the LKA, IPA, DRCC and PCS.

And naturally, the Solar Roof option SHOULD be available with the advanced tech package. If necessary, find a way to add just the solar and leave off the sunroof. That would have made my day.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for the sake of others, the Prius IV should come with fabric interior and leather can be added but not forced as it is now...

I think because Prius III can include all of the IV stuff (save leather), there's little reason to make leather optional in his config sheet.

I'd be all over the #8 option.

Agreed, but put the homelink and auto dimming mirror in with the III as well, it's a useful and relatively cheap item and even cheaper for Toyota if put in that many more vehicles.

I like most of the suggested packages.

Instead of the suggested Prius II, I would like a slightly enhanced Prius II: add a backup camera without the Navigation system and add lumbar support.

Where's the HUD and the HDD Nav? Are we restricted to just what's in current packages?

HUD >> Signal Mirrors. Signal Mirrors can be added as an accessory, a HUD cannot.

Also, maybe an ATP without leather as a special order package? and move the power lumbar support to be packaged with the cloth seats. The cloth seats in the Prius are quite nice and plush (even though they seem to be made of cheaper material than your typical cloth but it sure doesn't feel like it).

I agree. The only upgrades I would be interested in are the backup camera and the lumbar support. Put those on a Prius II, and I might have the perfect car.

#8 would be a dream come true. I think my parents might even consider trading in their trucks and suvs for a car.

Although, I didn't think Toyota could do Solar + ATP. I'd be happy with Solar, Nav, LED, and foglamps.

Is it possible to add LED and foglamps to a Prius IV w/solar,nav ? If so, how much more are we talking?

That's the configuration I would like. I live in a cool climate so don't really need the solar roof but would get it if I didn't have to give up the LED headlights.

I still wish they offered something better than old-tech yellow halogens for the high beams though. I drive lots of dark rural highway miles with deer and elk around and would happily pay a premium for the best possible lights.

I'd like to see Backup Camera added to this package, i.e., Auto dimming mirror with HomeLink® and Backup Camera.

    Thank you!

Thank you and others for replys so far.

In coming up with the provisional list, I assumed that we did have to stay with features/options available now in the U.S, but with new combinations that would appeal to PriusChatters more than the current 10 configurations.

To meet the requirements of the "Prius Team Challenge", therefore, to include the backup camera in configuration #2, Nav would have to be included, either as an option (which would add an additional configuration and require removing one of the other configs or would make option #2 more expensive for all, even those who don't want Nav).

The solution would be to include the Nav capable screen and backup camera (as in Gen II Prius) in all models III and above and then make Nav capability a separate option. I didn't think that this is a choice under the terms of the "challenge".

So, given these constraints, what do you think?

(Prius Team, any comments on whether I am interpreting the challenge correctly?)

We can see what the Prius Team says, but I would imagine that they would allow some leeway in the configurations as long as we stick to 10. Especially since I doubt they can act right away on our recommendations anyway.

Given that the most likely scenario is that our recommendations would affect some future configuration 1-3 years out, I would expect that it would be more useful to the Prius Team if we did in fact stray somewhat from what is currently allowed. Again, I am hoping this is so, because I would like the ability to get things, such as the backup camera without the Navigation system on the lower level configurations... Opening this up a little allows for more creativity and flexibility....

In fact, if my hypothesis is correct, perhaps there will be some new options available that the Prius Team would like to share with the Prius Chat community that we can include in the 10 configurations??? Hint, Hint....

Canada has the option of having a "screen" within the rearview mirror for backup camera operations. This would make the need for the NAV screen moot. I'd like to see this in the US as well so that we wouldn't need to force the screen/NAV onto lower packages.

I agree with you on this one. That would make the popular backup camera avaliable at all or most levels while making choices among other options easier.

Indeed we do and it's on all models except the base.
