Top 10 Reasons NOT to buy a 2010 Prius (from a huge Prius fan)

the base sound system is terrible in the prius, but not much worse than most base sound systems.

the tires suck yeah. on the 2010 I have no idea.

to me the only reason to wait if you already own a prius and would enjoy having a newer one is the fact it's a first year run, there will be some problems, second the PHEV should be out in 2 years from all the things I keep reading.

 

I too want a PHEV but I have a feeling it will be at least 3 years before that happens. In the meantime, I will be driving a 2010!

 

Well at least the big three have convinced someone their cars are good. The rest of America has spoken. Just ask Chrysler and soon, GM. On another note I saw on the news that the closing Chrysler dealers are having a fire sale on inventory. Some cars are being marked down as much as $17,000. You should stock up on a few cars before they are all gone.

Skip buying the car; bike or bus to work and sign up with Zipcar (or equivalent) for the times you do need a car?

 

If 300HP is important to you and 29 MPG (highway - 17 city) is impressive, why are you even reading PriusChat let alone comparing the Camaro to the Prius? BTW, the GM site lists the base 2010 Camaro at $23K.

The 2010 does not offer a substantial enough upgrade, i.e. Mileage for me to justify the purchase. The main reason was that the Chief engineer told us in Detroit the PHEV would be out at out the end of this year. Even if its 6 months late, I can wait for that.

There isn't enough of an increase in mileage because the starting point was so high. For me, it is a huge upgrade in terms of comfort, style and safety. Four more MPGs is just a beautiful little bonus thrown in to sweeten the deal.

I don't recall the Chief saying the PHEV would be out that soon -- excepting for the fleet vehicles based on the 2009 chassis. (There likely are a few other things I don't recall from Detroit, but I was among the first to leave the casino bar . . . after only two drinks . . .)

Two reasons not to buy:

1) it isn't different enough from the 04-09 model.

2) it is different enough to have growing pains as a first year model.

True. If one is already driving a Prius, there will probably never be an improvement in effeciency that will lower operating costs (gasoline), even with the plug-in (electric cost), that can economically justify the trade.

If you want to feel good about this then you need to be coming from an SUV like me.

If not, just buy it because you want it.

 

Well put -- except that a plug-in will provide significant savings even for a Prius owner. It would be a huge difference for me, because my commute is short enough that I could do the return trip on one charge. That means NO gasoline on typical days!!

 

I was wondering why Toyota has been emphasizing the solar roof, knowing that it does not recharge the battery and only supports ventilation. Yesterday, Toyota officially anounced that the solar roof will be made to recharge the battery in a couple of years. They have not officially commented on plug-in and lithium ion battery, but they are also sure to come. I will wait.

 

Let's keep our shirts on. In all likelihood, the G3 will be a great reliability champ like the G2. Anyone with a G2 can comfortably wait to see if that is true. Also, after the avid early adopters have taken delivery on their long-awaited cars, there will be some inventory buildup and some modest discounts. Prius will still be the leader, but it will no longer be practically the only game in town as in `04-`09.

 

didnt have upgraded stereo on either of the Pri's before but the 2010 is definitely better especially the base

i dont think that plug-ins will be viable for anything at a decent price anytime soon. now if you want short range EV, check out Zenn. they are having a fire sale on their current models and at $9,999 its a steal. going price last year was $17000....but then again, maybe they are making room for something much better?

one thing that i was shocked by and i could be dead wrong on this, but yesterday i spent a lot of time showing off the car and the air circulating felt cooled...now it could be perception only since there is always a huge difference between inside and OAT and that might be why it felt that way, but still very impressed with that (as was everyone else!!)

and i may have one. i notice that frequently, i dont have all my options available. i frequently go to my setup screen and have phone, Navi and Voice unavailable. same with phone panel, sometimes the speed dials are available sometimes they are not (can still access thru voice, but still not the way it should work)

so will be calling dealer this morning. hopefully a minor thing

i too felt that the changes werent enough on their own, but a combination of tech toys, loss of sales tax here aug 1st (that was $2600 off the price!!) and the priority discount simply added up to something that was too attractive to pass up. i paid a $660 penalty for early withdrawal of my CD which was earmarked for a highway capable EV, but still has a hefty down payment left and hopefully with the sale of the Zenn when the time comes, i will not have to finance that either
