This is probably a really crazy thought, but I long ago learned that if you don't ask, you don't get.

Deliveries will be made to dealerships in the next couple of weeks, right? Most cars will go to priority orders, right? Maybe there will be a couple that don't have a specific order, or another order waiting in line for that exact configuration at that dealership. So they'd be available for dealer trading in the region.

But--what if . . . . one of those unclaimed cars somewhere is exactly what I want? I've been bombarded with Travelocity and United and American emails for weeks telling me about great airfares. Maybe my car is going to be waiting for me in Tulsa and it just doesn't know about me yet! How would we find out about each other? How would I know to fly to Tulsa to be united with the car of my heart?

Hiya, I live in Portland and just found the one of very few in California. Going next weekend to pick it up hopefully if it works out. Start dialing. Call all the dealers all over. If you want to email me your contact, I can let you know if a dealer calls me. I tried to reserve a package 4 blue metallic with sunroof, do you want the sunroof? I should have a dealer calling me if it comes in and if this one in Calif is really there then there should be one for you with my name on it in Or or Wash, maybe Calif. I called everyone searching, searching.

I assume that you know you can take delivery of California vehicles across the border in Arizona (elsewhere?) and avoid the Cal. sales tax. This is especially a great deal for those of us who live in Oregon that has NO sales tax (we do have lots of pot holes, though). I have done this several times from SoCal w/ minimal cost for a driver while chasing in a dealer provided vehicle.

Does it actually work this way? I thought when you go to register it in your state, you have to show proof that you paid the taxes on it, or else they make you pay the sales tax in your state. Maybe that's only in Texas. Or maybe I'm just mistaken.

Anybody else know how this works?

Here in Mass. they don't miss a trick - you buy it in NH (with no sales tax) then go to register in MA and they make sure they get their 5%!

Back in the day, the dealer had to do some tricks to make this work legally. Something about "paying" you to drive your own car as a dealer employee until you cross the border. Otherwise, you took delivery in CA and may be subject to sales tax there as well as the destination state.

Thanks, but spouse says no--noting how seldom we've been able to use the sunroof in my Mazda in Oregon!

By the way--are you getting a Crater Lake plate? I think they will look smashing with the Blue Ribbon.

I just talked with Jon at Gladstone. He says he'll get eight cars in the first delivery, but that the Portland distribution people won't tell him yet what his eight will be. He has hundreds on his waiting list, but I'm the only one wanting the Blue III with Nav.

What's frustrating is thinkng that, with computers, this is a two-minute research project. First, are any 1225 NV Blue coming to this region? Second, to what dealerships are they going? Then I call the dealerships to find out if they're spoken for. Then I'm done--either I've got one or I place an order with my local dealership and wait for the next shipment or the one after that.

Someone please tell me why I'm wrong. I know I'm impatient, and I started the process late and have some nerve being so impatient, but that shouldn't mean it's as much of a mystery as it seems to be.

I was told to go through Reno, Nevada, just 1 and a half hours extra. Is that correct?

Sounds like it SHOULD be that easy. But I don't think it is. Esp. because (like another thread discussed) there are dealers wanting to trade with each other to get their list demands met.
Example: I want the III with sunroof in blue or red. You want the III with NV in blue. I'm #1 on my dealer's list. You are not on any. My dealer gets a III blue with nav and calls me to see if I want it and I say, "I really want the sunroof!" so he looks up which dealer has it with sunroof and says "Hey, I've got this III but need sunroof" and they agree to switch...cause he has #4 on his list that wants that exact car.

First come, first served....that is how I think Toyota was hoping it would work. Now, I'm not sure how easy this is for dealers or how much they are willing to trade to get #1 on their list what they want when #5 on list wants car they have in their hand...might depend on $$ down or not, etc.

Either way, I'd say calling and getting on a wait list (ESP. if they can tell you that you are only person on the list wanting THAT combo) will probably mean you get it sooner.

Also, my dealer told me (not sure HOW true) that dealerships don't know what they are getting because some decisions are made last minute. The boat pulls into port and cars are scanned and then the computer SEARCHES for matches. If you are on someone's WAIT LIST that is plugged into database, it will pop up that III blue nav is wanted in Portland. They have 15 of them so computer says ship one to Portland. If you weren't on wait list and thus not in database, that one would never get sent to portland. KWIM?
Again, not sure how true this is but makes sense to me if they did it this way.

    PS I hate waiting too!!!:pout:

I just found out that my car I was going to get is not my car (dont ask, did the right thing and can hold my head up high) so not making the trip more than likely. Good karma and good people here trump the car. Thats all I have to say for now. Will wait for the dealer elsewhere to call more than likely. When it is meant to be, it will be :)

What a night. I thought the dealer in California gave me someone's car here and messed him up but got a email that the person here passed on it so I got it. Whew! I am back on to pick it up hopefully next weekend because he passed. Thanks! You know who you are :)
As for the out of state thing with tax, Oregon does not have sales tax so that is why I believe there is the entry into another state to sign off that it will not be driven in Calif, hence the no sales tax.

Hi Martin, yes the dealer down there is setting up a pilot driver to follow me to Reno. Never heard of that and thought it might be shady but glad to hear you have done it. I guess we are going to Reno and then have something notarized there and then we are both on our way. Hoping it happens next week. The boat is here with my name on the car so going to Calif next weekend on a one way plane ticket(I think)

I believe Sales Tax is always computed based on the registration location of the car. So even if the car is bought in a non-taxed state, the state where it will be driven will collect the fees once its regstered.

Even in CA sales tax varies in different cites and can go up to 10.75% which will be the highest in the country :( (the poor saps living in Pico Rivera must be getting gold lined roads).

At least the Feds are giving us a slight break with the deductions for 2009.

Heres hoping that Toyotas woes will benefit the consumers given that the Prius saw poor sales in the last quarter.
