Use Prius or rent a car?

So I'm planning on doing a big roadtrip all over the US & Canada (Basically a loop from Vancouver down to San Diego across to Miami, up to New York, and back across the US/Canada). I'm also planning on buying a Prius when the 2010 is released here in Canada.

So the question on my mind: Is it actually a good idea to use my lovely new Prius for this trip? Keeping in mind that I should be able to rent a car with unlimited mileage for ~$19/day.

How much is the wear I'm going to put on my Prius going to cost me and which is actually cheaper?

if you are asking what is going to be cheaper - renting obviously. I would drive my own car, its the reason i spent money on it...

For goodness sake, use your Prius. You've already paid for it, gas will be cheaper. It's what you bought it for I presume.

Unless you can rent a Prius for $19 a day... grin...
Best roadtrip we took was 2300 miles in our Prius (Grand Canyon, Utah parks, etc) for $157 in gas ....

I don't even understand the question. Only time I don't drive my Prius on long journeys is if I fly.

If you are going to buy the Prius regardless of the trip; I say go for it! take the prius out for that long road trip. Your wallet will be thanking you! One thing I would be careful of is the break in period.

One thing you might want to keep in mind... I read a Toyota posting (wish I could find it) that you should avoid sudden stops for the first 200 miles and high speeds or sustained high rpms (I took that to mean continuous highway driving) for the first 600 miles. Maybe you will have your new Prius past these break-in miles before your big trip. Have fun!
