newb here. I'm interested in buying a 2010 prius. Consumers report mentioned that they recomment electronic stability control. Is this an option on the 2010 prius? Is it recommended?

I don't know if it is standard on the base model, but it is standard on all the others. For the Prius it is called VSC, or Vehicle Stability Control.

S-VSC is a standard safety feature in current and 2010.

Why would you want to turn off VSC?

it's vehicle skid control.. it's used only during skids

trac control is standard.. along with even brake force distrubution and a few other little goodies.

vsc only makes a difference when you hit rain or snow doing 65+ where you wouldn't have felt the car lose traction.. but the car knows.. and keeps it pointed wherever your steering wheel is pointed... though assisted steering.

i'll assume every new prius gets it.. since these things were very optional, along with tire pressure monitors and back up cameras.. which all kinda fall standard on 06+ models

Well, let's say I like to have a bit of fun when situation allows and done safely. :D Don't get me wrong, VSC is god-sent.

But sometimes, you need that "nanny" out of the way to understand the dynamics of car controls on the edge which I am pretty sure the 2010 has pushed the hybrid envelope further.

.. uhh.. the rev limiters and standard traction control will kick in before you have a real chance to see what the car is like without vsc.

i've driven my 04 while in maintenance mode.. which disengages vsc and supposedly trac... it's not much different.. even with my wheels...

    S = stability.

Vehicle Skid Control was 2003 and older Toyotas. They updated the software for 2004 and called it Vehicle Stability Control.

Correctly set up VSC will help stop roll-overs too, not just skids.

We recently totaled our 2007 red Prius when we hit a deer at 68MPH with wife driving, me and two kids in the car. VSC kicked in and kept the car going straight in our lane and perfectly controllable. Not even a broken fingernail among the passengers, although we can't say that about the deer. VSC - it's what you want. Turn it off at your own risk. Rumple

Holy cow! Glad to learn you folks walked away from a near 70mph accident. At that speed, a vehicle can easily go cartwheeling for hundreds of yards. Did the curtain airbags deployed?

That pretty much reaffirm the Consumers report that nbecker had read about.

    Hooah to VSC!

No airbags deployed. Nobody hurt in the least. I think VSC rocks. Here is the thread with pics of the car. Rumple

Yes, it's not 'standard' but it is included on all 2009s with Package #2 and higher...meaning all retail vehicles sold here.

This is a 2010 thread, so the 2009 information doesn't really apply. I believe VSC is standard on all 2010 models, but I'm not completely sure about the bottom ones.

The Toyota STAR system (safety stuff mosty - stability, traction control, etc.) is standard on all models.

That makes sense. I'm happy to see them do it. I suppose most of it is required by law, or will be required by law, but it seems that Toyota is ahead of the curve.
