That's why I paid a tech $25 to do the soldering for me. He re-flowed all the pins under a microscope.

Good luck Jeff, not that you will need luck just a bit of skill. Mine is still going strong.

Hmm, so my MFD is acting up again. Radio and A/C don't work. Energy Monitor doesn't show the arrows but the wheels move.

    Time to resolder.
I used a specialist and I expect my repair to last a long time.
If it plays up again I'll just pull it out and fix it again.

resolder? you mean the motherboard? The dealer told me my dad to replace the motherboard for Cdn$1,200. Galaxee said the symptoms displayed are not indicative of the classic MFD failure. I'm so confused.

That sounds like what mine did. Have you read the MFD thread by Hobbit?
Mine the radio would go off or when the MFD was acting up the radio was on but if I pressed the audio button the screen says audio off and when you press the Climate button a message says the AC signal isn't available or something like that.
Either way I'd re-solder the plug to the board as in Hobbit's instructions, there is little to lose and a lot to gain.

The first time it happened, I had the A/C not connected or sth like that. I fixed it by playing around with the DICE. This time, there are no messages so that's why it might not be the classic MFD failure. I'm gonna try and unplug the DICE again. I'm not home with the Prius so i'll have to do so when I go home during Easter.

The more I hear about these add ons to the MFD the more they scare me.

Well nothing I can do now. I'll update when I go home and try out the various suggestions.

Well if you don't have the DICE, that's one less factor lol.

My dice will crash my MFD occasionally, just unplug and reboot, then all is good.

Can anyone tell me if they have purchased the refurbished unit for the display unit in the 2004 Prius if they have had any problems with the refurbished unit or does it work fine? I have an opportunity to purchase a unit at close to $1500 plus Toyota labour to install it.

Re: MFD issues on '04/'05 Prius

I've had the DICE crash itself several times (i.e. nothing will come out of the speakers even though the iPod is playing). Unplug, reboot the car, plug it back in and it works.

Ok so my brother decided that he'll try the repair rather than wait. He unplugged the DICE and plugged it back in (he hasn't got back to me whether he unplugged the DICE unit fro the radio or unplugged the wire to/from the radio from the control box.) and now it works

$1500 is way too much. I got a 2005 display (revised part number) on eBay for just over $100 that is working fine. It's pretty easy to install yourself. All you need is a philips screwdriver and a 10mm socket.

We had to have our MFD replaced last April. Cost for the refurb was $450 I believe the total bill was $650.

So far the refurb. is working like a champ. Still very ticked off that such an expensive part was so flawed though.

Thanks for the info. Its much appreciated. In Canada that is the price, so I'm going to go ahead as a new one is $3900 in Canada.
