Hi all - its been awhile. A long time ago I went in with a bunch of you kind folks for a group buy on a 'thing' I installed behind the dash to connect my ipod. (it works great btw) - I got the first gen iPhone and it worked great and charged at the same time. Now I have an iPhone 3G and it no longer charges. Is there a cable I need to buy? Hopefully I wont have to go behind the dash again. My DH thought I was out of my mind to do it first time. I've searched the forum and see that there are now 3 different 3rd party devices to buy. I can't remember which one I have. Its rather big and sits in the glove compartment. I thought it was coastal tech but nothing on their page mentions the ipod interface. a link would be nice
You can get an Iphone cig. lighter charger from ATT phone store and that will work. Don't buy a Belkin (Wally World sells them) make sure it is a Apple charger or it won't work. It looks the same but it won't work.
Assuming that the "thing" does more than just charge and you want to keep using it rather than get a new charger, there are a couple of options. Basically, what happened is that Apple changed which pins the iPhone can charge off of between the two iPhones. The original iPhone used the Firewire connection pins on the dock connector to charge, whereas the iPhone 3G uses the USB pins. There are adapters that will take the power from the Firewire pins and put it on the USB pins. I have no idea why Apple couldn't just accept power on either set.
