This is what happens when a race track driver compares a Honda Civic hybrid to an NHW20 Prius. Warning, put your drink down before watching:

Ha, that's really funny, and not too bad of an evaluation. I like the part where the test driver is talking on the cell phone and eating lunch while driving.

    Bob,

    Nice find, thanks.

I didn't see a pulse and glide segment...
    nor "super highway mode"...

or were they during the burger and fries bit? :p

Finally, somebody with a sense of proportion and a sense of humor.

Hahah. I think Prius lap time is slower because he was talking on the phone and eating his lunch.

Slow 1/4 mile in reverse....... ha good to know my Prius' limitations. Could have looked quite the fool challenging my neighbor to a reverse drag race.

    that really made my day!!

as far as the drag, the Pri would have had better time, but the window was rolled down!!

will say its great illustration of how well the snergy drive system works. the laptime for the Pri was slower despite faster initial speed cause the battery was not contributing for the entire lap

The Prius reverses using the electric motor only - there is no reverse gear, everything being permanently coupled, and the engine cannot spin backwards. (No engines spin backward - they're one-way only - reverse is conventionally implemented by inserting an idler gear into the gear train, causing the direction of rotation to reverse.)

I believe it's software-limited to a relatively low speed, but can't remember what it is. I think it's less than the forward max EV speed though.

basic math here... lets see, ¼ mile time in reverse was what 44 sec, 1320 feet. so 30 f/s

    is 20 mph.
that of course assumes a fully charged battery that would allow it go the 1320 feet

lol.. "the civic hybrid looks like a civic and goes fast backwards"

Yeah this shows the limitations of the HSD in terms of providing reverse gear power. I'm surprised at the handling as I figured the HCH would be the better one. Perhaps the Insight would beat the Prius in handling since it appears to have been tuned for that moreso than the HCH and the journalists seem to be having fun.

    Gufaah Gufaah,
No, I'm not laughing at how slow the hybrids went, nor am I laughing at how they corner. I'm laughing at poor race car driver Sammy Hubenek, and poor poor torque TV :pound:

These poor knobs ... worrying about how fast they can get to the next fuel station, while Nascar worries about going out of existence !! Whether GM or Chrysler are even going to be around, to be remembered ... he he! ... or whether peak oil will result in ANY gas being left at all for their gas guzzlin' racing dinosaurs ... or the worsening economy, where no one even considers buyinig a land barge ~ or or stop! :pound: hoe, my guts, you're killin' me!

Reverse speed in a Prius is slower as anything faster than 20mph would overspin MG1 (you'd have to look at a nomeograph).

This is not true, sorry but there is one example which puts the lie to this statement.

    Huh?
I was not aware of the Zeta until I followed your link. But I am curious, was the oil catch pan standard equipment?

A former VW MicroBus owner, I had to rebuild the 1500 cc engine. One lesson learned: "Permatex" case sealant should be given away free but only if the customer buys an oil catch pan.

Bob I think the tray is a requirement of the museum. As the Zeta is a 2 stroke I doubt the engine leaks much oil. It might be under the gearbox.
I'm a huge fan of Permatex, use it all the time. VW castings are porous.

Anyone in too much of a rush to follow the link, the Zeta engine starts backwards to reverse. It there fore has 4 speeds in both forward and reverse. This is only posible because it's a 2 stroke.

If the ignition timing can be dealt with correctly, any two-stroke
can run backwards. It's not depending on an ordered sequence
of events spanning more than one revolution to aspirate and
    exhaust.

Cell phone while driving? I'm guessing it wasn't filmed in California.
