This is a key point -- and well observed. We'll know more once the embargo is lifted (March 25), but from all we've been told, the larger engine and gearing changes allow for much higher mileage on higher speed travel. This is where diesel engines have had their great strength. Unfortunately, most diesels are not very clean.

I expect we will see many more people able to achieve higher MPGs in the 2010, because you'll be able to drive it at U.S. freeway speeds without as much "penalty" as is paid by the 2G Prius.

Thanks. And to think that the mpg improves while space increases.

Not sure why they have to worry about C&D. Those folks wouldn't be happy unless it was a fire breathing 800 hp rocket

Just based on sitting in the two, I liked the LS 460L better. Could be because the 600h they had was very dark color, and the LS 460L was a beige color

A co-worker has a 2006 LS430 and I frequently get to ride in it. If I recall, the car has around 180,000 km on it and feels as new, quiet, and tight as the day he bought it

Well, except in winter when he runs the studded tires. But the LS has great traction with studded tires, so its worth a bit of hum from the tires. It's a tank when equipped with studded tires

I've never personally driven an LS. I did take the LX570 for a spin. A very luxurious SUV, although the Range Rover HSE has better ride quality over poor quality roads - the HSE has four wheel independent air suspension, the LX has a live rear axle

Also, the LS570 rear seat is almost as tight at my FJ Cruiser. If you're looking for a luxury SUV, the Sequoia Platinum is a better buy

Again - based on my "sit in the car and absorb the ambience" test, the LS 460L is truly a fine car. So is the new Toyota Avalon

Probably Truffle Mica vs. Golden Almond. I haven't seen a beige one in real life but I do like Verdigris... as the name suggests, it's grey-green and has close resemblance to Tideland Pearl.

I'm a simple man, so I call it beige. It's a very nice creamy beige - at least it really sparkled under the HID lighting ...

    SLAP

    I'm fine

The irrational side of my brain - which has MINORITY voting status - fell in love with the Lexus and wanted to take it home that same day.

The vaguely sinister, rational, logical side of my brain gave the irrational side of my brain a good slap, and carried on with life

It's all good. I'm sure the bruising and scars will heal with time

But the drive is just nowhere near the same as even a Gen 1 LS...or even an ES. I rode around in a coworkers Camry Hybrid today...I was surprised it rode as hard as it did. Didn't ride badly, but nowhere near as smooth and quiet as the ES...let alone an LS. Material quality was way way below too.

In terms of power, it might be more powerful on paper but the feeling isn't the same as the V8...

Oh by no means is a Camry an LS but after 20 years, it's getting close. I didn't find the TCH ride quality that uncomfortable. I thought it was nice and quiet (esp. since it has the acoustic windshield and rear wheel well sound insulation). I tried the ES350 and of course that was a step above (not to mention the shift changes were silky smooth even though the car was still in its break-in period). But for the price, the Camry XLE V6 is pretty good.

i only hope this will also work for the EU prius.
because US freeway speeds are still lower than lower EU freeway speeds ( 120kmph or more )
and then the diesel may still be the better one

i dont hope so buth the lower freeway speed in the us is better for higher MPG
i think this is also wy ( next to 15inch wheels ) us prius owners get better overall mpg then here.

Its not that the ride quality is uncomfortable at all, its a good riding car. Its just that one wouldn't get into a Camry and say "wow...this car rides really smooth" or "wow, this car is really quiet" the way they would when they get into an LS or even an ES. Its just an ordinary sedan ride in the Camry.

Now you know that price bears no relation to size. No surprise there.

If you buy a new Prius for less than $25K, you are getting good value.

There's a myth in Europe that the US speed limit is 55mph. It was, but now it appears that isn't the case - the limit is different by state, and Texas appears to allow counties to set the limit, but is anywhere from 65 to 80mph in the continental USA. In addition, as in Europe, a lot of drivers seem to treat it as 'minimum speed'.

See this great map from Wikipedia:

(from Speed Limits in the United States)

It's definitely a failing of the current Prius, compared to diesels and even some other petrol cars, that it's relatively weak above about 55mph. Our current EU driving cycle's 'extra urban' part does not capture this weakness - reaching 75mph only for a few seconds in one peak, most of the driving being below 50mph - which gives an unrealistically high number.

Because of the problem with this test, the reported 3.7L/100km 'extra-urban' consumption (can't convert off the top of my head, but I know 3.9L/100km = 72.4mpg) may not accurately capture the new high-speed behaviour. We just don't know until someone takes a car onto a flat bit of motorway and drives at a steady 70mph.

hahaha I doubt it. We had a 2002 Camry XLE 4 cylinder so going from that to the Prius was what made me take notice.
