Don't forget toilet paper. In case of total collapse, it's pretty nice to have a good supply!

I have a criminal record, so it's even easier for them to track what I'm doing. :D One day two U.S. marshals came to my door, and when I opened it, one of them introduced himself and his companion, and said that he was leaving the district and he just wanted to introduce his replacement. IOW he wanted to show his replacement the local peace protester.

Naw, assuming a total economic/political collapse, everybody would be stinky. And when *everybody* is stinky, then *nobody* is stinky

I think that almost made sense ...

You silly guy, that was your mistake right there: you were a PEACE protester! IOW you were very highly unlikely to be a threat/danger to the two heavily armed US Marshals

I'd be willing to bet that after they left your place, they rolled a fattie and giggled for hours

It's like how the DEA will raid terminally ill cancer patients and bust them for possession. It's very highly unlikely a person dying of cancer will put up much of a fight, especially if they have drainage tubes and an infusion pump hooked up

If you really want respect in our society, you have to be a big time criminal. Eg: mention "banker" and "billionaire" in the same sentence, a lot of "news" correspondents will all but perform fellatio for you

I guess that would be correctly phrased "will all but perform fellatio TO you"

Apparently, if you really want large numbers of persons to literally kiss your nice person, mention you're a criminal drug kingpin. Anyhoo, we're both reading off the same page here, so carry on

Right now "hard assets' are overpriced because of speculation. Same thing happened in the diamond market in the 80's. Not a good time to buy IMHO

So if I had gold to sell I should look for a pessimist?
After the Apocalypse do you really think people will trade for gold or useful stuff?

Actually, I don't think they were armed. Maybe they had pistols, if U.S. Marshals are required to carry pistols. The outgoing guy just wanted the new guy to know who the pacifist troublemaker was. I was rather amused by the whole incident. I didn't even recognize him, though I have a bad memory for faces, and he might have been one of the ones who tried to get me to name my friends on the day of my arraignment a couple of years earlier.

How did we get onto this from buying gold and silver???

I think we need a sheep forum, requiring explicit opt-in to participate, just like Fred's House of Politics; and all discussions involving sheep should be barred from all the other forums. I personally am bored by all the sheep-******g references.

Hmmm I've only had three other members express interest in Fred's House of Sheep.

In my 30 years or so of investing, I have watched silver and gold rise and fall...just like everything else. I see no point in it. Their marketing makes you want to sleep with silver bars under your pillow at night. If you are a regular working Joe, invest in the stock of good companies and keep dollar cost averaging over time. No matter what markets you go into, dollar cost averaging is the only thing that works over the long haul. I know this phrase has been overused, but "trust me". Do not make lump sum investments into anything, except maybe real estate...but that's only if you know what you are doing and you are willing to manage it directly yourself.

Actually, I invested in a gold Gen3 Prius. (...only kidding. While I really like the car, it's not an investment, but one does need to choose a way to get around, and I like this way best)

HAS BEEN, being the operative word. It's a bubble now though. It rose like hell during the crash (as expected) but has not dropped back down as Wall Street recovered. It's also benefitting from nonstop advertising as "Buy Gold!!!" is everywhere you look. The people selling it though are the ones that rode it up over the last year. Despite what folks tell you, it is not a hedge against apocalyptic collapse. You can't eat or burn it to stay warm. And if you buy from one of those ads, you're either buying a piece of paper that SAYS you own gold (provided that company is in business after the collapse) or you are buying coins or other forms of gold that have a significant upcharge over the per ounce cost.

I'm not buying any gold or silver right now. After looking at the history of the prices the price of gold is going to be at its peak soon. So now is not a good time to buy.

    invest in silver or gold?

    We have some metals...

Most of it is in rounds... less than half of the metals by weight are issued coins.

I wouldn't call it an investment though...

Platinum is another one to stick in the safe if you want to stash some metal...
