Yet another 04 Prius multi-display bites the dust. My dealer claims never to have heard of the problem (a relatively small dealer in north Georgia). Quoted me $850 for parts and labor. Wish me luck on trying to fix it myself!

Has anyone had any luck with Toyota?

I have had nothing but a good run with Toyota.
Fix it yourself or have a radio tech fix it with prints of the posts at the start of this thread.
My repaired MFD is going strong 12 months on.

MFD problem located and successfully repaired on my '04. I removed the unit and took it to a student who used to fabricate circuit boards. With a borrowed microscope, he found the loose connection on the end of the 60-pin connector. Re-soldered it and went all the way around the connector to be sure. I put it back in and everything works! Thanks to Hobbit and others. Now what do I do with the $850 that my dealer wanted?

Sorry, my wife has already figured out how to spend the $850 several times over. We've got a wedding coming up for an offspring. Contributions will be accepted!
MFD is still working after 3 days!
Interestingly, the parts guy at the Toyota place said he had priced several MFDs for the 04. Service writer said he had never heard of the problem. Hmmm.

Mine is still good 12 months after it was repaired.
    Good luck with the wedding.

Mine MFD is finally dying - 2004 at 60,825 miles. Dealership quoted an exchange MFD part 8110-47071 at $2600 and told me it would cost me $5000 to get a brand new one. Guess I'll start saving up, or find someone to look at Hobbit's fix description!

    Thanks!

Remember you can usually find a working MFD on ebay for a few hundred bucks. Replacing it is pretty easy.

Mine started failing again today when I first started the car, so I wonder if the low temperatures are affecting the solder joints.

The fix is so easy, really.
If you can't do it yourself a good auto electrician will do it with Hobbits instructions for a reasonable cost I'm sure.

Thanks for the encouragement to try to fix it myself. I'm going to have a take all your advice and pull the MFD, then take it to a friend who can't wait to get his electrical engineering paws on it. I'm looking forward to reporting another successful Hobbit-inspired MFD fix.

    Thanks again, all.

I performed Hobbit's repair on my screen a few months back and still had issues with it until I unplugged my Dice ipod adapter. The Dice will still crash the screen on occasion, unplugging it and rebooting makes it all better. I probably didn't need to re-flow the solder, but I guess it didn't hurt either.

PriusChat is the best forum on the internet! No question.
It has saved me hundreds even thousands of dollars and sent me half way round the world. Name another forum that does that?
Good luck with the repair, nothing to lose eh.

Mine just went out 2005 with 72,000 miles. I think I can come up with what M-F-D stands for.

On what page is the hobbit fix?

I got a used one (2005+ revised part number MFD) on eBay for $125 since I was tired of tearing it apart to resolder it. I guess I don't have good solder equipment or skills for the tiny size of the leads and it failed on me twice after reflowing pins 59 & 60 on MFD board #2.
