Fremont Toyota will add all kinds of unneccesary options to justify a huge increase over MSRP for cars on the lot.

Let's stick to topic...because whenever someone mentions possibly buying something else other than a Prius (for whatever reason), the bashing begins!

    Waiting for a Subaru Hybrid?

Subaru is investing in Diesel's not hybrids. Their 2.0 Boxer Diesel is an interesting engine and should hit US markets in 2010.... Don't hold your breath for a Hybrid anytime soon!

I owned a Subaru, and they are nice cars around here, especially in the winter. We considered buying a Subaru this time around, but were disappointed by their mileage. We were going to end up paying a lot of money for a small car that didn't get much better mileage than our AWD van. It just didn't make sense.

That's how we ended up with the Prius.

With this economy, I expect a small initial rush on the 2010 but a quick drop-off soon afterward. I am one of the people on the waiting list, but I will not pay over msrp.

I don't intend to pay anywhere near MSRP as I don't need any car that bad. I tried to compare the Silver package to the 2009 and figure it is roughly comparable to a Touring package 3 or Standard package 4 so I'm revising my estimate of the MSRP of a fully loaded 2010 to $35600-$38400 putting a silver at $25600-$26400.

you need to befriend a Toyota employee, not only do they get the vehicles at cost, but for some reason they are giving extra discount below cost for employee purchases, my g/f's parents just bought a new camry below cost, around a thousand below cost I believe. Not sure if they will let you apply to Prius, if they do im looking to trade in my 09 corolla for a new prius, just waiting to see pricing sheets.

    Supply and demand anyone?

In 07 I logged in this forum saw how much the cheapest dealer in my area was selling for, got that offer in writing and went to his competitor with that printout.

A gallon of gas was about $2 but Toyta had just delivered too many Prius cars and they were rotting in dealerships. I got mine for $1k below invoice.

It is way too early to determine supply or demand for the 2010 model:

Who knows how many will Toyota deliver?
Who knows what the gas price will be then?
Who knows how peoples finances will be then?
Who knows how many will prefer buying 09 models just before the 10's come in?
Who knows how much better it will really be than a used 07 or 08 model?

If I were you I would buy now, I don't know anybody who got a new Prius and was disappointed. Just try to find the best deal.

If you really prefer next years model and you want to wait then just wait until you find the best deal. Consider how much you would save over your Tundra in the meantime.

Just try to find the best deal.

To let all the people here know how the car business goes. Here it is, I sell Toyota. When the first gen prius came out, we could sell them over sticker. In LA, they sold them for 10k over sticker. So basically, it is supply and demand. All my customers talk about the economy and i know you can discount the car more, and LOSE MONEY...NOOO. Thats not how it works. In this economy, i don;t make what i used to, but a good living. So all the people thinking that a new brand new prius just coming out with limited supply is coming with a discount or rebate, your answer is no. SO thats my 2 cents, and they cars will hit cali first, and trickle to the east coast. They are having a plant in Miss changed to prius insted of highlander since the gas prices , so maybe they will come this way too. P.S Treat your car dealer with some respect too. We dont give cars away!!

I believe the Prius is going to land in NJ as it lands in CA to satisfy the pre-orders and you're a bit behind in manufacturing news. Last I heard the plant reassigned to Prius production is mothballed due to excess capacity. If you are correct about pricing there will be a silver Platinum package in NJ looking for a good home. Enjoy these sales at MSRP (or close) while they last. I suspect they won't last long.

I look at it this way. The 2010 model is the commencement of a new generation... I think we are all, or at least a hefty majority of us, in agreement that the 2010 Prius will have an increased Starting Price compared to its 2009 predecessor. People who are "early-adopters" are the ones who seem to have the problems, they are the ones who find all the flaws with the vehicle, and there are always bound to be flaws in a newly introduced product. So... where this is going: I feel as though if you want a reliable car that's tried and true, go with the 2009 (this is what I'm doing, I ain't waitin' in line for God knows how long to get a car that has a tweaked look and couple new features for probably at least 4k more than a comparable 2009). However, if you want the newer version and are willing to accept its possible faults and pay more in the process, then by all means.

P.S.: And to make this clear, I am in no way insinuating that the 2010 Prius will be a flop or a piece of junk, all I'm saying is that the 2009 is the end of a generation that has been reliable and tested while the 2010 is new territory that hasn't yet been perfected.

Anyone that has any sense should not pay more than MSRP. Sure, there might not be enough to go around in the first few weeks, but wait a month or two...and now with talk of Toyota making great progress with Lithium Ion batteries, I think a lot of folks that Toyota thought would trade up...might just be willing to pass on the 2010 to see what's coming next year.

It's amazing how a thread can go on and on with a single salesman's speculation of what a car might sell at. I will buy a 2010. I already have orders at two dealers and money deposited over one year ago. I will not pay over MSRP and have never had to do so, even when getting two 2004 Prius cars during the height of the waiting period. I had to fly on a one way ticket to get one, but it was worth it. It looks like the dealer in Vienna, Virginia is going to be outselling a lot of other dealers. If my local dealer does not deal, then he will have my business.

Just at a dealer in the Chicago area. He has 12 2009 prius on the lot. He gave me a price of 25600 on a 2009 package 6. I am still not sure whether I am going to wait for a 2010 or buy the 2009, but he is sure making it hard for me to wait. Also there was a $500 rebate from toyota that was already factored into that price.

Trust me and those of us who have said it...this car will not sell above MSRP, and if it sells at MSRP...it won't be for long.

The world is totally different than it was in 2004 and 2005 when the Prius first came out and we had those huge waits (I know, we bought ours in April '04 and drove 350miles to get one at MSRP with no wait). Lets look at what has changed:

    1. In 2004/2005 Americans had access to freely flowing credit, now probably 50% of people who could have gotten a car loan then can get one now...and thats generous it might even be less.

    2. In 2004/2005 Americans had endless home equity that just grew and grew 20% a year. Now...you know how that went.

    3. In 2004/2005 the Dow Jones Industrial average was approximately 11,000. Today? 7,000. Thats a 40% loss of the value of American's investments and net worth.

    4. Unemployment in 2005 5%. Today? 8.1%

And its not going to get better before the 2010 comes out. The best we could hope for is for it not to get worse.

In short...due to all of this Americans are NOT buying cars, and a huge mass of 04-09 Prius owners are plain going to be UNABLE to move up to the 2010.

Modern cars are very reliable and will last for hundreds of thousands of miles without NEEDING replacement and many families just won't be replacing them. This is the most unfriendly environment to car sales we have ever seen.

Car salesmen, as a stereotype, don't understand these things. If it makes them feel better to think they'll be able to sell 2010 Priuses for over MSRP good for them, don't believe them.
