ok first off, I apologise if I've confused anyone. I was under the impression that LKA only helped in sudden lane change manoeuvres (as you can see in the demonstration by Nihon Car & Bike) but it is also Toyota's lane departure warning system with the added benefit of the car nudging you back into your lane.

Thanks for the link and the added info. I've been wondering about the full capabilities and uses of the LKA option.

yeah, thats exactly it... warning is LDW, not LKA... they are calling it different things as they do operate in different conditions.

I haven't seen that before. That's really cool. I just wonder why the written comments say that "the movement towards automated driving makes me nervous". I think that would be and may be the eventuality, of course with the ability to disable the feature when needed.

I'd take this whole LKA system over a sunroof any day; especially the adaptive cruise control, and especially if it comes with the 17 inch wheels (I want a stable car this time!).

I would take it too if it didn't cost an arm and a leg. The big problem for me are the roads where I live. Mostly we can't use cruise control, let alone this level of automation. If I lived near highways and multi-lane roads I would be more interested. It would also be more useful if our roads were visible during the winter. I use mailboxes and trees to find the road. I don't imagine LKA does very well with that.

One remarkable thing I saw at the Detroit Auto Show was a diagnostics video from the Denso lane following system showing how it recognizes pedestrians:

As this sequence shows, the system identifies pedestrians at a distance and follows them until they leave the field of view. This is a remarkable system that could result in a significant reduction in vehicle-pedestrian accidents. It also recognizes vehicles and the lane.

Does it have an override, so that we can still hit blind pedestrians? What good is stealth mode if we can't hit people?

Any form of automated driving will make people nervous until they learn to trust them, and trust will come with use and experience. I had not heard of LKA and ACC until the threads of the past few days. I recall a post some time back about a test in a parking garage that ended with the car crashing into a pillar. Clearly, they had not gotten the bugs out of that one yet.

I guess all in all I like both ACC and LKA. I wonder what ACC does in curves where the car ahead moves out of the direct-in-front position. But I'm sure they've taken some measures to deal with it. I'd probably pay for such features, but not if I have to take all the other high-end features (such as 17" wheels and factory NAV and leather seats) along with them.

To add to daniel's sentiment, Cruise Control still scares my wife - she won't use it. Her hwy FE shows too :-(

My guess is the ACC plans for and deals with it. The LKA seeks out and responds to curves in the road, automatically steering the car to keep within the lane, so I expect it is able to view cars in those lanes even in a pretty significant curve. I don't know whether it can handle anything not within line-of-site, however.

I too am impressed by these new safety features that assist the driver. With respect to the ACC, does anyone know if the system retains the set speed as a target value that the car regains, when the car ahead departs beyond a certain distance?
Also, I suppose there is still a certain speed at which the ACC drops out entirely and has to be reset.

Hmm. This was NOT how it was explained to me in Detroit. I was told that it was nothing more than the warning beeps. Very interesting.

I wish they could use the ACC also at low speeds. I mean when there is a traffic jam and you have to keep starting and stoping all the time. Imagine, you turn on ACC and it automatically follows the car in front. It turns off whenever you manually accelerate or brake.
Also, do you know the Volvo City Safety that fully stops the car if the driver is distracted and the car in front is stoped? They could have used the camera of the LKA and the radar of the ACC for that, don't you think?

yes it does... as soon as obstacle is moved, it regains your target speed.

ACC is LS does that... but in reality, car will never do all the driving for you, so trusting these systems is not really smart.. it is good to help you, but you should let it drive your car in all situations.

S class introduced ACC system with no minimum speed, and german journalists managed to easily dupe it so it would crash in the barrier (high speed in the tunnel, it wouldnt stop sufficiently).

so all of these systems are there to warn you first, and then help you a bit to regain control... they will not take over your driving, nor should you take them as such.

That's the system on the S-Class that got fooled.

If the car is out of sight, it will resume speed. With LKA, it'll follow a slight curve (as shown on the video).

With the more advanced ACC (the ones that can be used in city driving), if the car in front disappears, the ACC is cancelled and a beep tells you that you are now in full control of the vehicle.

There is a more advanced ACC. That'll cost even more money than the standard ACC (ditto the PCS versus the A-PCS.. A for advanced)

Wow this should be just the thing for those who want to read or watch TV while their car drives them down the freeway. They probably won't kill or maim many more people than they would if they were drunk or having an involved discussion on their cell phone. Ain't technology great?
