Anyone know the engine code for the 1.8L in the new Prius? Bonus points if you can also tell me the chassis code(s).

2ZR-FE (FXE for the Prius). Don't know the chassis code since it's a new chassis.

Ah, the same basic engine that is in the Corolla, Matrix and Scion xD. Thanks much!

The chassis code could be the ZHW30... we'll see.

    NHW you mean.

Yes it's the same engine but with Atkinson cycle.

No, I mean ZHW. NHW would be the chassis code if it still had an N-series engine, but now that Toyota has put a Z-series engine into the car the chassis code will start with Z. I don't know if it will be a 30-series chassis code, but I would guess that it would since this is the third generation Prius. Of course, sometimes the platform is spun off of another car, then the code could be anything.

Hmm, I see. Should've asked us before we went to Detroit.

Well, often times they won't release the chassis code until the car is just about ready for sales. Once the cars start showing up in the dealer ordering system the chassis code will be available.

Does that mean the Corolla, Matrix, and Scion XD have an offset crankshaft? Or does that mean the Prius will not have an offset crankshaft?

Speculation aside, I'd find it hard to believe Toyota backpedaling on such a successful design. Cylinder wall wear reduction was a motivator for this design IIRC, as well as a more efficient use of the power stroke at TDC.

The base 2ZR-FE engine has an offset crankshaft.
Pressroom - Toyota - Press Kit Details
"The fully balanced crankshaft is offset by 8mm to the intake side of the bore centres to reduce the maximum side force on the cylinder walls and increase fuel efficiency."

I believe MRV took that photo. I was sitting in the driver's seat when it was taken and happy that she did so.

what car was that from? We can see that GVWR is only 200lb more than on 2004 Prius.

blue car with nav, 15" alloys and moonroof. They may all say the same number despite the options.

Gross weight will likley be fixed, it's curb weight that determines "carrying" capacity. Sadly, we don't treat our cars quite like airplanes and many of us may routinely exceed this w 5 adults, full gas, and some luggage.

nevertheless it pretty much confirms that 100lbs note from detroit... which is rather impressive.

seeing new Avensis dismantled to pieces, latest vehicles get so much anti-crash protection, it is miracle that they are all not 5000lbs.

You don't calculate weight and balance before you back out of the garage?

No, and my tires hate me for it!

On a different note, it was interesting that the Chief mentioned a requirement to keep weight UP in some ways for safety/crashworthiness reasons.
