Selling my Prius

If I sell anything these days, I use Craigslist. It's free and very popular. I've bought and sold many items there. Items I sell usually generate multiple nibbles very quickly. I largely furnished my new house through Craigslist. Granted, I haven't sold a car there, but I have no reason to believe it wouldn't be effective for that.

Consider listings in multiple places. E-Bay is an option, though that's more complicated for both seller and buyer than a simple classified ad. Bottom line, the more exposure you get, the better.

I am in the "homework" phase for buying a G2 in the spring and selling my `o6 Honda Civic.

As for Craig's list, that seems to be strongest for lower-end cars. For a nearly new one like JunsGrayPria's, I think cars.com and autotrader.com are the more promising way to go. Both of those let the prospective buyers go past the boilerplate-laden dealer ads to the private sellers, and to pick out what they want. As for Ebay, I suppose it's always possible that a classified ad there would bring in someone who had not looked at cars.com or autotrader.com. However, with auction sales on Ebay, it seems that one of two bad things usually happens: either there are no bids because the starting price was too high, or the car changes hands too cheaply because the reserve price has not been thought through and is too low. The other day, I saw what appeared to be a perfectly good `07 G2 with option package #2 and 31,000 mi. go for $13,525 on Ebay.

Conditions now are bad for sellers and getting worse. During the fuel price spike, Toyota built up G2 inventories. Sales plummeted when the fuel price crashed, with the result that every dealer now has a dozen or so new G2s in stock. (Anticipation of G3 might also have helped soften the market for G2s.) I would not be surprised if Toyota USA has still more new G2s standing behind chain link fence someplace. There will surely be discounts and "incentives" to move the remaining new G2s. I might get one of those if they cut deeply enough.

I'm afraid that JunsGrayPria faces a market declining so rapidly that bluebook prices will lag behind it. He/she should start immediately, and cut to an opening asking price of about $18,000 right away. Extra things I would do for such a new car in an ad would be to reproduce the original window sticker along with the photos, and to have a link to a free Carfax report.

 

You shouldn't have a problem selling that at least from what I've seen/think. 2007 Touring Package 6 with 17k miles for $20,000? Post on Craigslist, should sell pretty quickly. Also post pictures, lots of people like seeing what they're reading about before they drive over to look at it.

 

Uhh... why not sell the old car instead?

 

Sorry to hear that your 2007 will have to go. Advertise in several places as mentioned and don't forget pics.

 

I bought my '04 via Craigslist and sold 2 other cars. I also used Cars.com which has great resources attached as well, like being able to access Carfax directly, reviews, specs etc. That being said, I got better response using Craigslist but that would depend on your community. I imagine Pasadena would be pretty active for Craigslist.

 

My vote is for Autotrader.com, local advert, and craigslist. Why are you selling it, if you don't mind us being nosy.

 

I posted Daughter's car on craigslist at 7:30pm Friday and had it sold w/cash in hand by 11:00am the following morning.

I got my '89 CRX for $875 on craigslist. It's been a great car over the 15 months I've had it.

Yeah, I also made the mistake of borrowing money to buy my first new car. Much cheaper and safer to save up for it and pay cash.
