But sticking a hybrid in a $75,000 Escalade is?

FYI, I used to drive a 2005 Tundra regular cab V8 up until march 2008. I took it to the desert and jumped it in stock form and modified. When i was shopping for that, I looked at the Silverado and F150. The old F150's were complete shit and crumpled in crash tests. The Silverado was nice but was too road oriented unless you shelled out the extra cash for the Z71 Package. My Tundra also carried 2600 pounds in porcelein tile with the only mod being 265/75/16 Load Range E tires inflated to 70PSI. GM trucks are not bad in the higher end models such as 2500 and 3500+ but in lower end (midsize) Toyota dominates with the Tacoma and Nissan with their Frontier. The idea of a 5 cylinder in a truck is just goofy, the reliability of those is horrible and torque is minimal no matter what the numbers say. At least with a Tacoma you can tow 6500 pounds if you need to.

I had been in the market for a car since December 2007. I drove Altima's, Fusions, Camry's, Corolla's, Focus's, Prius', Altima Hybrids, Camry Hybrids, etc...The top choices were Prius, Altima Hybrid, and Fusion in that order.

We own a 2007 Camry bought November 2006 when they first came out, so far no problems. Our neighbor bought a Malibu LTZ or w/e it is. They need a new transmission already for I dont know what reason. They have been driving a loaner Impala while their new parts come in.

Saying Toyota is doing the same with FULL hybrids as GM is not the slightest bit constructive.

Toyota already have a hatchback, sedan-f, sedan-r, minivan, and truck/suv... each offering a unique configuration. Now they are increasing production quantity while at the same time improving the design.

    They are doing it.

    It will prove cost effective.

What? Toyota has the Prius which sells in relatively large numbers in the US. Other than that any hybrids are niche vehicles at best just like GM and Fords hybrids.

You are serious about the Malibu? WE have sold a couple hundred without any problems at all. It is the highest car in initial quality and your neighbor buys one with a bad transmission?

Not saying its a shit car, just saying that he got one bad model.

About the Initial Quality...does that matter? Really does it? All cars are going to have initial quality, problem is when its past the initial stage, is it still going to be quality 5-10 years down the road?

GM built the Escalade and Tahoe Hybrid instead of putting the Hybrid system in something like the Traverse which could compete with the Highlander and be affordable to more than just the wealthy.

I'm kindly bowing out of this thread because I have nothing more to say

It is generally a precursor to long term quality and reliability. When the japnanese dominated initial quality it was one of the mainstays of their marketing efforts.

Why are you forcing present tense, rather than looking at the future?

Isn't the whole point of the bailout to help build & ensure that future?

Hybrids the size of Tahoe are indeed niche for non-utility use. Smaller, like Highlander, will become the largest. So, they'll have a place. And those like Camry will most definitely. Niche now, standard tomorrow.

i agree to an extent, but it will take time and there are many economic variables. Just for some reference I remember being at a series of urban planning meetings from 1979 -1981 and all the experts said that in the future that houses would be smaller than 1500 sq ft and would only have one car garages. Would you like to have been the builder of 1250 sq ft houses with one car garages over the last 25 years?

Or perhaps when such happens then American innovation will once again rise to the challenge and form new companies to produce reliable, high quality and fuel efficient vehicles that consumers will buy.

When I bought my 2003 Prius, Toyota was declaring that by 2012 that ALL of their vehicles would be hybrid. I notice now that they are not making this claim which suggests to me some truth in your cost effectiveness comment.

No, spinsters probably confused that memory. My 5-28-2003 blog confirms this with: "Toyota has already stated that they'd like to have the hybrid option available for every vehicle they offer by 2012."

That doesn't mean the entire production inventory would be converted over. It means you'll have the choice to buy. Like the option available to get automatic or manual then, it could be traditional or hybrid in 2012.

My favorite Toyota hybrid is the Lexus LS 6.0 hybrid. 438 horsepower and a whopping 20 miles city and 22 miles/gallon highway. i am sure if that was a Cadillac there would be a couple of smokin' threads about it.

No I was being sarcastic. If it would not have had such a horrible effect on Detroit the Prius would be my favorite. Actually I am pretty happy with My Tahoe Hybrid. It can haul 4 hockey players an excited father and all their gear and still get 23.4 mpg. Not too bad. It would definitely take two priuses to do that.

If GM had come out with a luxxury hybrid auto like that it would have been good for at least one negative headline in the New YOrk Times and two or three articles with tom Friedman pontificating. I can't believe how much air time that blowhard gets. He knows next to nothing about the auto industry and yet is treated as some kind of expert. The guy is king of the hypocrits, lives in a 15,000 sq ft home in addition to his apartment in New York and has the nerve to tell people what they can and can't do.

This is typical of GM. A huge management error. A 20 mpg hybrid will not sell. A 40 mpg hybrid will sell. How dumb can you get, spending many millions for marginal mpg increases. You see that all across their line of hybrids, including the Saturn. This company really needs new management.

Not confused about the declaration at all, in fact the owner of the local Toyota dealership is the one who reminded me of this today when I was there picking up my 2009 plates.

BTW, what the heck is a "spinster"? Should I be offended?

You are right, it would take two Priuses, which together would use the same amount of gas as the Tahoe hybrid. But if there were only 2 hockey players, you would need only one Prius, and be able to save half of the gas.

That's someone who intentionally distorts facts with the hope to mislead.

There's no reason for offense unless you are the source with that ill intent.
