Yes! Absolutely. There is no way in HELL I'm buying this car if the display looks like that. What a lump of coal for Toyota to pass off on the unsuspecting public!

I never said it was a deal breaker. Shoot, it doesn't take a lot of looking to find individual gripes about the GenII Prius posted by people who wouldn't give up their Prii for anything. We love the car but we all have our individual nuances.

I'm disappointed that the mpg gauge still only goes to 100.:(

there is a dozen things about the Pri that i either:

    wished it had
    wished it was done differently
    wished it didnt have it.

does that mean i wouldn't buy another one?? well already had the chance to NOT buy another one and blew it...

    so that only means that...

there are SEVERAL DOZEN things about other cars that i either....

I'm not an EE guy so I don't know how hard it would be to create these LED-based characters without lines. Seems to me the individual LEDs that are used to construct the characters would have to be placed so close to each other to make the lines really thin to the point they're not so visible from about two feet.

Is this technically doable? Perhaps. How much would it cost to implement? No clue.

Maybe that's why some car companies opt for the electronic analog speedo instead... :)

Not really. Just shut off external lighting (outside the car), and shoot the HUD display with no flash. The image would be the LED display on black, just like what we're seeing.

All you need is a good tripod.

I don't really expect to see a HUD, but on the other hand, this is a simpler LED display, as oppose to the more complex LCD display we're seeing on the dash. So it's unlikely to be on the same display panel -which could point to a HUD.

Most actual pics are photoshoped anyway. Mine (below) certainly are, simply because underexposing is the only method I have available to capture sharp images without getting washout.

And of course, our eyes interpret images different from a digital camera. So, online representation will never really match the real-life experience regardless.

Whether its on a HUD or just on the forward display, I guess this is part of the answer to the lower MFD positioning. They put the instantaneous MPG up front so you won't have to look at the MFD as often. Doesn't help for those trying to confirm glide mode or dead band, but I have often thought it would be handy to have the instantaneous mpg up where the existing spedo is. I've taken that thought far enough to consider rerouting the Inst. MPG data to the Speedo itself :)

Really, I drive slower than everyone else anyway, so why do I need to know how fast I'm going ;) Plus the Speedo goes to 199 :D

my point was that there is an reason they sent photoshop and not an real pic... so far what they did is send actual pictures from the prius they have in posession...

why did they change it now for photoshop? there has to be an reason... could be HUD because they dont have it on pre-production model? or they dont want to give away it is HUD until they unveil the car?

Also, RX450h specs got leaked, and its got HUD...

I think you're reading too much into that shot and the photoshop stuff...PS is the industry standard, almost all photos require at least cropping, and most need adustment of the curves and highlights.

geeus....what is wrong with making the stuff look presentable...

you act like Toyota is trying to pull a fast one because the cleaned up the image...

granted "photoshopped" does imply that a fast one is being pulled, but that is not ALWAYS the intention here. consider the source!!

I'm not sure, but I think his point is not that the image was "cleaned up", but rather that he believes there was never a photograph at all. He seems to believe that entire image was "drawn" with an image creation program.

I have no reason to suspect that this is true, but if it is, then it gives some weight to his assertion that the reason the image was "drawn" instead of using a photograph is that either it is too difficult to get a clean photo of a HUD, or that they are trying to hide the fact that it is a HUD.

ya that is the impression i get as well...

but otoh, if i see a pic that is blurry, poor contrast, etc... i will not think highly of the site its on overall... if it looks amateur, i tend to doubt the info on the site a lot more.... Toyota spends a TON on maintaining an image...

putting crap pics on their website is simply bad business and extremely stupid. to think they are modifying images for any other reason is, to be frank...just as stupid.

for Toyota to be caught in a lie on the uneraseable internet is simply beyond imagination

I know that my post here isn't particularly relevant to this thread, but as you all know, some some sites claim the new Prius will have a 1.6L engine, with others putting their bets on a 1.8L. But according to an article, there'll be an eco and an executive version with each one doing 89 g/km and 92 g/km respectively. Now, I was thinking, maybe the eco version will have a 1.6L and the executive will have a 1.8L. Does that make any sense?

    The article:

(ps. does anyone know when the new Prius will arrive at Australia?)

I'm in agreement with Tony in general on the simple aesthetics of the numbers and add that I'm also VERY disappointed to see the GREEN display again. What is this, DOS? Where do I place my telephone handset to dial up my modem? This is the same display as my microwave. Sorry, this is a big letdown. Honda has a far nicer display.
