Team Prius has yet again this Monday shared with us through John's Stuff.com another picture of the upcoming Prius. This time it's a picture of the speedometer, gas gauge and what looks to be a current mpg gauge.

To me, since it looks kinda simple, I wonder if it is what will be displayed via an HUD, if there is one in the 2010. Here's the pic and you all be the judges:

not exactly a mystery is it...it's sorta fun to have the obscure ones to try to figure out.

If this is on a Heads-up Display, would it make sense to display the gas gauge there?
I fill up every four or five weeks, and I sure don't check the chiclets very often.

I'd like to see a simple energy mode display integrated into the HUD, more so than an MPG display.

The highlander hybrid has that, but in reality it's just not very helpful.

Does this mean the gas gauge still isn't linear?

Why wouldn't it be helpful? I use the current MPG bar on the Consumption Screen more than anything else. So, adding it to the line-of-sight is a nice design upgrade for me.

Initial impression: Wow, looks clean. That's a new way of displaying the digits in the MPH area. Makes me wonder if that's set up to display alphabets as well.

After thought: What a disappointment. MPG only goes up to 100 MPG? If it is going to have a plug-in option, it will likely need more than 100 MPG.

An MPG gauge right by the speedometer? If that is current MPG, the constant moving would seem VERY distracting...

Ok, so here's why I am guessing it may be what is shown thru an HUD. Unless my other speculation is right...

If you look at the picture of the instrument cluster that Bossdowner posted you can see it says MPG on the bottom left in between the two blue circles which show the corresponding buttons on the steering wheel. So if this new teaser photo is from this cluster then maybe it is a small color screen like what the crown hybrid has for its instrument cluster, albeit a lot smaller. But if that is the case, don't you think they would make it more colorful since we can see in bossdowners photo that there is a clear difference in color between the MPG and the blue circles to the right and left of it.

So that leads me to believe that this is either what an HUD would Project onto the lowest part of the window directly in front of the driver OR that object on the dash in front of the driver which I feel may be an HUD projector may just be a small seperate cluster which will show the info in this new picture and the 'main' cluster in the center of the car will show hybrid info...

Good point because I was wondering where the shift indicator was. In the past two gens, it was clustered with the speedo and fuel gauge.

A higher resolution version might be, and it's not completely worthless, but IMO it's easier to glance at the MFD than to use the display on the dash just b/c the graphics are easier to interpret and have more detail.

How do you use that detail?

For me, keeping the MPG above 50 a majority of the engine-contribute time is what I do. That's pretty basic, easily supported by the scale shown on this new display. How low it dips during acceleration and when it recovers would be easy to see too.

But then again, I only have a (E10 fueled) lifetime MPG of 48, which is quite a bit lower than yours.

I drove a Prius for 3 years, then upgraded to the next model. There was a whole slew of little improvements all over the place... few of which were obvious until getting behind the wheel. 5 years since then, I'm totally looking forward to the upgrade experience like that again.

Collectively, it adds up to quite a bit.

And remember, some of us don't have the high-resolution Multi-Display.

problem for me is that that spy pic of the dash makes 0 sense for me...

it just does not make any sense.

If it has some kind of LCD screen instead of simple speedo, then why would word MPH be engraved on the plastic there?

and wouldnt fuel gauge be a bit too much for HUD? I understand current fuel consumption, that makes sense and many new cars have that...
