I drive 90 miles a day, so I don't want to end up with the wrong tires for the winter.

Commute is mostly 1 lane each way country roads, dodging deer.

I'd go with the General Tire. They're priced reasonably around here, and offer a modern tread design. They appear to be a copy of an older Nokian winter tire

If your jurisdiction allows studded tires, get them studded. Secondary roads can stay icy/slushy for a long time

By far the most popular winter tires here in Vermont by my informal survey are Nokian.

I wouldn't run their "all season" tires on a rusted-out wheelbarrow, but their new directional winter tire appears to be a good tire.

The ALtimax Arctic I saw on display are actually Made in Germany. That raises my trust factor

Nokian produces a very well respected line of dedicated winter tires for cars and SUV's. Their top winter passenger tire is the factory studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5.

If you have a truck or SUV, the factory studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 Sport Utility is an exceptional winter tire. These are also among the most expensive studded winter tires in their class

There is also the top of the line non studded Nokian the Hakk R. It is an excellent snow and ice tire plus - low rolling resistance and low noise.

I wonder why Nokian didn't show up on tirerack.com?

    They don't carry Nokian tires.

You'll be far safer with a set of steel rims of course. It may help a little while the snow is flying or the temperature has plunged but I'd rather search online for good winter tires. I am sure there are many sites online.

There are several online stores that sell tires. But my sister and her husband were very pleased with: www dot clicktire dot com as they cater to specific needs and budgets at their online store. They also offer the provision of writing to them so that they can find the size of the tire according to customers’ specifications.
