I'm changing my oil today on my 08 prius and I can't remember how much oil I need to add after draining and changing the filter I want to say 3.9qt's. Can someone please confirm this for me thanks.
3quarts puts you right between the low and full. No fuss, no messy measuring over and over. Do not use 4quarts, it'll put you a bit over the top. If you want to hit the top, then use 3.5 quarts (+-.2 quarts, depending on how much oil is remaining inside the engine/oil pan)
Toyota stated oil & filter capacity = 3.9 quarts (will put you 1/4" overfull) Actual/empirical oil and filter capacity ~ 3.7 quarts (will put you on the full mark) As mentioned by another above, 3 quarts will put you at the midpoint on the dipstick. I'm running 3.5 quarts at present, about 1/4" below the full mark. Anything between 3 and 3.5 quarts should put you in a safe zone that is in full compliance with the warranty/manual concerning dipstick oil level. The hard part after filling with synthetic is seeing the level at all.
Hold the dipstick so that it reflects the available light. Then you can see which part of the dipstick is coated with oil. I also use 3.5 US qt to refill.
Using a Mobil 1 "double" capacity oil filter adds a bit more oil. I use 3.5 quarts after filling and installing the Mobil 1 oil filter.
on a 2005 Prius how much oil is between the low mark on the dipstick and the full mark. Sister-in law is at low and is taking it to a shop for oil change. She wants to know how much it used.
