My wife has suddenly decided she wants Blue tooth for her cell phone( I shouldn't let her talk to her friends!!). I have a 2008 package 2 which did not have it. Is it possible to have it installed after the fact for a reasonable cost by Toyota? Assume the wiring may already be there?

It is in place, I have seen the dialing screen on my package 2. I have installed the ultimate lockpick and have not yet played with the BT to see it it works. I will make a report if I get around to testing it. Problem would be if it actually connect with the phone. Time will tell, and it's in short supply right now.

I also have a Package 2. i have seen bluetooth units that they can wire into the car and radio. But my solution was at Costco for $39.99. Clips on the sunvisor, shows the number when receiving a call.

From what I have seen (Prius - look for the link to second microphon on the mods page) the microphone is already in place in the overhead light. I have not verified, but it does seem promising. I do wonder if the actual bluetooth receiver is in place to make it all work?

I think the bluetooth module is buit into the JBL stereo system (Package 3 and above). Don't know for sure though.

the bluetooth module is built into the actual mfd display screen. i believe it is a different mfd display screen. if i am wrong about this, then it is a daughter card that is connected into your exciting installation. the microphone is located near the sunglass holder, map lights, etc

    probability
    90 % different mfd screen
    10 % daughter card

You would need to add the JBL system with the amp and the microphone in the roof console at the very least. I have verified that microphone is not there on my '08 package 2. Also, the wiring is not there for the microphone and the wiring is not there for the JBL amp. I don't know if the MFD is different but I have not found any reference to a part number for the Bluetooth daughter card. That would lead me to think that it's not available separately.

why would you need the jbl system and amp, when the bluetooth is contained in the mfd?

this is what the daughtercard/mfd part looks like...

oh yeah we haven't mentioned you need the steering wheel controls also. without the steering wheel controls theres no easy way (or any way???) to even go into the telephone to actually call anybody!

i remember a post a while back when someones bluetooth went bad. the dealer couldn't order a new bluetooth card, so he replaced the entire mfd.

so the minimum required for toyota's bluetooth solution would be a mfd, a microphone, and the steering wheel controls.

    the jbl system/amp is arguable.

the toyota repair manual specifally states that if there is something wrong with the bluetooth module
such as your mfd lan monitor reporting a "exch" or code 57-47-17D-xx-x you are to replace the MFD end of story!

the code could be 57-47-110-xx-x or 57-47-with anything at the end

The JBL amp is what integrates the audio from the Bluetooth module into the audio system in the car. Since you cannot have the JBL amp with out the JBL headunit you would need both. As for the Bluetooth module one would just have to take their MFD apart and see if it's in there. I have never seen a separate part number for a Bluetooth equipped MFD vs a non Bluetooth equipped one, only NAV vs non NAV. You would need the steering wheel controls also.

toyota says in the owners manual and the repair manual that the bluetooth is contained in the mfd. keep looking and i am sure you might be able to find the part numbers.

its been reported somewhere, i sorta recall that the t3 uk prius does not have the jbl amplifier, because that space is taken by the intelligent parking assist option, but it has bluetooth...

I believe that the cars with parking assist don't have a 6 disk changer, not the amp.

i just went to toyota.co.uk, it says it has 9 speakers, bluetooth, and a cd changer, and parking assist. and i read that parking assist is under thepassenger seat. the amp is not part of the equation.

if anything serves as the master device, its either the mfd or the audio head unit. remember we are not talking about run of the mill car stereos but actual devices connected to the av network. where as each device has its own 3 digit hexadecimal address.

if i am wrong and the amp is critical, like maybe its where the microphone cable goes, i do not know please post references, preferably pages out of a repair manual so i can delete all my posts

The amp has network connections along with the audio connection from the JBL head unit. If what I have read in the shop manual is correct the MFD communicates directly with the amp for the bluetooth audio. Regardless of how the Euro systems are set up on a US car you have to have the complete JBL system to have the bluetooth to work as you cannot have either just the JBL amp or the JBL head unit; both are required for the other to work.

regardless, this whole topic is moot anyway. the cost of the mfd alone is $699 or more. who is going to spend that just to get handsfree.

    the mfd communicates with everything

we need someone in the uk to take pictures of his amp / parking assist system to put a nail in this thread.

maybe while they are down there they can post up the part numbers for the parking assist system, so we can start a new whole thread about how to install that.

yeah jello is correct. you do need the amp. when i pulled fuse #45 (the amp fuse), i could not here any audio. but my bluetooth still worked, and i was able to call someone, but no sound

i dont want to lose my presets. so we need someone else to pull the fuse on thier radio and see if the phone works!
