The oblong lumps under the headlights are for popup high pressure washers.. a legal requirement in the EU/UK for HID headlights, along with a self levelling system.

    Hi All,

Definately do not like the offset instrument display. The Prius needs the speedometer straight ahead.

Also, the turn signal/fog light cluster are placed in a recess which will act like a parachute, rather than shed the air around the corner.

And one more time - the CENTER CONSOL SHIFTER IS STUPID! And the lowered MFD is also very dumb. Why put that big hump in the middle of the dash there, if not to stick the MFD up into it. With this overall view of the dashboard I am just appalled at the lack of design sense, that just drips from the second generation Prius.

Also, what happend to the nice dashboard shelf that used to be in the car? That dashboard is so short, and slope-y, that its just not handy at all.

    Dumb dumb dumb interior design!!

Re: BREAKING NEWS! 2010 Prius Photos posted on PriusChat First! Real or no?

Exterior, nice to see there have not been many changes.

Interior, wow, the seats need to be pulled back a LOT more, im 6'4" and just barely (but comfortably) fit in my 08 with seats jacked back 100%.

I definitely do not understand moving the shifter to the center. What does this serve? It's an ECVT. The shifter is nothing but an electrical switch. The reason conventional shifters are in the middle is because they are mechanical.

I for one love the shifter to be right next to the wheel in fingers distance.

Placement of the center vents looks too GM-esque and we know how frequent those break.

I sure hope these are beta 3d computer renderings.

As an edit to this post, regarding shifter position... I cannot possibly believe that Toyota is worried about marketing this car to "people who want it to be more like a regular car", because they are flying off the assembly line and every dealership has a backlog. Apparently, the current shifter position is NOT A PROBLEM. This has me wondering if this is fake.

If it is the real version I don't really like the looks. I was expecting something different. It almost looks like what Toyota would want a redesigned Celica to look like, not a Prius.

Based on looks I much prefer the new Insight.

I haven't been on here in 2 years and I got an email about this thread. I don't think I really like the way it looks in those photos. For some reason I'm actually starting to like that chevy volt. I doubt I'll get any motivation to get one though. I'm happy with the evo 9 I got now.:p

On image shows the left side of the car, and the other image shows the right side of the car. Maybe they have two different types of headlights on the car to help them decide which design they like better.

Somehow the car pictured here looks a little too short to be the new Prius.

I'm 6'3" and am very interested in purchasing a 2010 Prius. The only thing holding me back is the availability of height adjustable seats. C'mon Toyota, even manual pump-ups like V-dub offers would be fine on the basic one and eight way electrics on the better models. My wife (5'10") and I on our test drive agreed we'd never survive a long trip with the stockers. Passenger seat also. Go ahead and add the cost,we'll pay it. The roofline looks like it's been lowered,so hopefully the abundance of headroom won't vanish. The console looks functional, but it looks a little tight in there. I'll say my prayers.

Looks Like Insight. Front Grille is Ugly.

    Raked Crease:

With the raked or angled crease in the sheet metal of the side body/doors, it looks like the new Honda Insight.

Minor Note: That raked crease may make designing of aftermarket body side moldings more problematic. Often, in order for side moldings to look good on cars with such a crease, they have to be an OEM design that's raked at exactly the same angle as the crease. It depends on how pronounced the crease looks like in real life. E.g., If a crease is very pronounced -- indented like on some Hondas and Acuras -- that usually requires the side moldings to be raked at the same angle.

    Front Grille:

With the bulging, round emblem smack in the middle, it looks like a fake clown nose. On cars, it's unattractive. It's reminiscent of the front grille of the Mercedes SLK roadster which has a grille that's even uglier.

The solar panels are not to improve gas mileage.
They are to keep the interior cool in hot weather.

I'm so sorry to see they put the shifting handle back like EVERYONE elses. I think that is unique and easy to use on my 2008 model. My first car was a 1964 Valiant 6 cylinder with the push button drive on the dash.

It looks like a Mazda 3 wagon. We'll see if they tweak it at all before the final release.

Not sure if the photos are real or not, however the aspect ratio of the images is certainly off.

If you reload the images in Photoshop or the like and resize them to around 640 x 400 you'll get a better idea of what "it" really looks like, real or not.

Re: BREAKING NEWS! 2010 Prius Photos posted on PriusChat First! Real or no?

Not to go to Toyota's defense here, but I suspect they made the changes to accomodate public acceptance and understanding. For example - when retractable gear were first implemented in aircraft, the lever to actuate the gear was a simple stick. Pilots soon became confused and critical of its design. It wasn't until after the handle design was changed to include a rounded end that resembled a wheel, that its acceptance became uniform.

I suspecet Toyota put the shifter in the center because that is where it always is in an auto. Moving the MFD down into the dash was done because that is what everyone else is doing.

Do I agree with Toyota's decisions... not entirely. But I will reserve my final opinion when the final product comes out.

When you manufacture a product and want to retain a loyal customer base and attract new customers, you periodically have to change your product. For example: Remember the old Motorola numeric pager back in the '80s that was about 1/2 the size of a pack of cigarettes and had the display on the top? After making these things for a few years, the company noted sales were shrinking rapidly. Motorola implemented one change: color. They offered their pager in 5 different colors and sales skyrocketed. I think this is what is happening with the Prius.

I like the shift-knob where it is now, but I understand why Toyota moved it.

When I first got my Prius, I kept bumping into the shift knob when signalling (edit, do'h kept bumping into the shift knob when I turned on the headlights or wipers). I would imagine focus groups first trying out the car may have done the same, or gotten confused over its placement. Toyota moved it to make it less confusing.

Unfortunately, I absolutely hate having that center console - I often have to park in very cramped areas, and can't get into my car on the driver's side. Not having the central console lets me get in on the passenger side and scoot over.

Oh well, I don't plan to buy another car for 5 or 6 years anyway (Gen IV will be out).

The pictures appeared overnight in the PriusChat forums, and after several hours of speculation as to whether the photos were real or just a fan's photoshopped guess, Jalopnik has written, "We sat down with Toyota PR this morning, showed them the pictures and they've confirmed that yes, this is the new 2010 Toyota Prius set to be revealed officially at the Detroit Auto Show in January. And yeah, that's all they're willing to tell us at this time."

I like the upcoming interior much, much better than the cheap sea of hard plastic that is in the current model. The new look is sportier but almost looks too much like the outgoing Civic or the previous Scion tC.
