How did you decide what gender he/she was?

Though it seems that the names that owners have mentioned here on PC are mostly female, there are a few male Prii. I knew mine was male but I can't explain why...

Pearl is female. We don't go until she decides it's ok to do so. Ergo Pearl is female.

Pearl is smarter than I. Therefore Pearl absolutely deserves a name.

    ;)

Sipper is definately a female - with a mind of her own. Smarter than most cars, but cares to mostly keep that to herself.

It's easy to name a car. You sit it it and he/she just sort of tells you. Rachel is a female sheep down under. My wife's Pri is "Sheepie" and she says female even tho blue. I am the Sheepdog. Just sort of fits you know?

David, "Pearl" makes perfect sense: Driftwood Pearl. I get it.

krmcg, "sipper" is non gender-specific. I'm stumped by this one.

Sheepdog, "L'il Rachel" is a great name. A Barcelona Red Prius is definitely female, no matter what she's named.

I'm beginning to get a hint as to why PHriuS is male. The Silver Pine Mica has a utilitarian look, and I drive almost exclusively to and from work. They seem to be male attributes.

Also Paul, I just don't see many SPM Prii around. That kind of makes 'Him' an individualist who goes his own way. Thats definitely male!

    Flounder is a male.

Guess I have one of the few males. Named it Flounder because like the fish, the prius is different. It is dark gray and just seemed to be male.

Sheepdog, around here, there are oodles of every color Prius. I wonder, are there different regional color preferences?

    airedale, I like your reasoning!

Wonder how the ladies name their Prii... Or am I opening a can of worms here?

By deduction, our Prius is a fiery redhead named "Prius."

She came with a tramp stamp on her nice person which says so.

But, with the "Hybrid Synergy Drive" stamp on the other cheek, I'm pretty sure she goes both ways.

"Princess Fiona" - need I say more?
OTOH my friends silver Prius is Renaud (the silver fox) and definitely a boy.
The Prius is the first "girl" car I've had - all the others seemed to be boys.

In my case, finding exactly the car I wanted involved a nationwide
Internet search. Ultimately found it some 400 miles away in Rhode Island.

While I was working out the details with the dealer, in a moment of non-
linear thought, I remembered the opening words to a Swing-Era song that I
always liked: "A boy found a dream upon a distant shore, a maid..." So the
car was a girl. Her name, like the song's, is Amapola, Spanish for "poppy."

    Here's the song:
    http://www.pcdon.com/-JimmyDorsey_Amapola.wav

In the second half of the song Jeanete MacDonald sings, and she captures
the life, and excitement, and energy that Amapola provides daily.

    FWIW, here's the whole story:

:pound: Took me a while, but I got it.

Patrick, the name is awfully familiar, but she sounds sassy! She has some history and carries a lot of baggage. :D

Judy, how did you conclude she was female?

Rokeby, that's beautiful! And maybe not so non-linear after all. Romantic, exciting and energetic! Definitely describes a female Prius.

I actually had a name for my Prius ("Tommy", short for "Tom Swift And His Electo-Mechanical Motor Car") before I actually had it. I name the GPS Holly, though, because of the voice you know she's female. Although for those who get the Red Dwarf reference from which I got the name know it can be male, too.

Ships, starships, and shuttlecraft are always referred to as feminine, even when she is named after as male such as the Nimitz, the Bozeman, or the Zhang Heng.

My '08 Spectra Blue Touring Pkg 6 is called "Charlie" as in Charlie Brown because he lives with an '08 Magnetic Grey Hybrid Camry named "Lucy".

"Priapus" is a male. Plain and simple. Have you seen the size of his antenna?

(That navigation voice is his feminine side)

How did I know Fiona was a girl? Well, I think it's a little late for the birds & the bees lecture. . . .

All I can say is, you just know. The same way I know that my teddy bear is Chloe & the stuffed border collier is Pete, even though he has a little stuffed puppy he carries around.

My daughter's handheld Garmin GPS is "Gary" (Garrie?) in spite of having a female voice. My identical one is "Ernestine". Her little blue Yaris is "Cher". Our previous cars (98 Cavalier and 94 Cutlass Ciera) were Little Black and Big White, both boys.

I do think you have to spend a little time with your Prius before he/she speaks to you - kind of like the old days when you had to wait to find out if the baby was a boy or a girl. No known gender test for the Prius that has not arrived.

Its kind of like naming your boat. Those of you who have had this pleasure know instantly the angst associated with naming. I am considering naming my Prius "The Downeaster Electra" Downeaster for Florida and Electra for its HSD system (not the Buick!) Any thoughts? (And due respect to Billy Joel.)
