"... out of the clear blue western sky, comes Sky King!" "Penny to Sky! Penny to Sky! Come in Sky!" (what a crush I had, at the age of 3, on Penny!) sure, count me in! I'll be in the hangar winding up the Songbird!lane:
And remember the "Flying Crown" emblem on the "Songbird" had 7 points, not 5!!! That was a key element in one episode that featured a FAKE "Songbird" The things that we remember as kids!!! 73 de Pat KK6PD
Those sneaky bad guys! Put 'em on Leno's 'stupid criminals"! I don't remember that episode, but it sounds just like a typical show. That's how i spent all those Saturday mornings!
I watched it as a kid. I remember nothing of it except that he always saved the day by flying his airplane. In my memory I lump it with Sea Hunt, where the guy always saved the day by scuba diving. We always referred to that show as "glug glug." Ah, the old days! There was the one where a dog always saved the day, and another where a fish always saved the day, but I think that one was a decade or two later than the others. (Herman Melville, responding to criticism that "a whale is not a fish" responded that a whale is an air-breathing fish. So "Lassie of the Sea" by Melville's definition, is a fish, too. So, Sky King had Penny, and Lassie of the Sea had Jessica Alba. Lassie the dog came from a generation when TV shows weren't supposed to have pretty girls. Did glug-glug have a pretty girl? I don't remember.
I have thought of it often. I couldn't remember if the girls name was Penny. Didn't they have a dog too?
Yeah, I used to watch Sky King. But I must have been really young because I only remember the girl's name was Penny.
I liked Sky King & Fury b/c, as a suburban kid in NY -- these were western characters with a contemporary twist -- Sky flew around in a Cessna (the Songbird), fighting crime. In Fury, Peter Graves (before he joined the "impossible Missions" team) drove the prairie in a '56 Chrysler station wagon, getting Fury out of one predicament or another. The combo of western style & modern vehicles appealed to me. Sheesh, they were only Sat morning TV shows made on shoestring budgets!
It might have been before Canada started allowing U.S. crap to pollute your northern airwaves. Or it might have been before your time. I don't know your age. I am 60 and Sky King would have been on when I was a pre-teen or a teen-ager. Let's say maybe it was 45 years ago.
