Hi all, I'm new to this forum and the prius world. I picked up my prius about 10 days ago. I was sold a 7yr/75K warranty plan for about $1750. I was told it was discounted from $2500. I stumbled across this forum AFTER I already purchased my warranty (which was included in the financing). My question is this, is it too late to undo this purchase with the dealer and get the warranty through w-shack? Is the w-shack plan different than the dealer plan? Will my dealer honor the warranty even though it wasn't purchased through them? I'd really appreciate your advise. I don't know if I should leave everything as is, or if I should cancel if it's not too late. Thanks!
CANCEL IT i heard you got 30 days to cancel the extended warranty to get a full refund after that its pro-rated call the dealer and if that does not work, call toyota financial services the warranty shack is the same warranty. its 980.00 something dollars for 100k 7 years $0 deductble and its registered with toyota, and i think it comes with 4 years of roadside too and you won't have any problems using the wShack deal at any toyota dealer please do not tell the dealer specifically where you buy the warranty shack deal
I just got a call from the finance guy at my dealer. I am interested in a warranty too. This guy told me that with a package 6 and the NAV I had to purchase the warranty day 1 or it would not cover the NAV. I have no clue what this is about. Any one have any comments. I have already sent in the form to warranty-shack for a quote.
no.. the dealers full of it. you have up to the manufacturers warranty of 3 years 36,000 miles to purchase it. the pre paid maintenance is a little different, i think you only have 5000 miles to buy that. i believe the waranty will also give you toyota roadside assistance too the warranty covers the struts and suspension system, which is pretty rare, as it is not specifically excluded from the list of covered items the toyota warranty will cover hotel rooms and stuff like that if you are away from home, but you have to be 150 miles away to qualify for that, i think its somethng like 5 days over the 5 year period? it might take a couple weeks to actually get the warranty paperwork back from toyota, after you purchase it, you can call toyota financial services with your car's vin number to confirm that it has been activated
Cancel it immediately. Do it in person, and yell and scream if you have too. You'll probably end up going nowhere if you try to cancel by phone. The plan sold for $990 by Troy/WarrantyShack.com/Toyota of Greenfield is Toyota's longest and most comprehensive plan -- it's Toyota's Extra Care Platinum Plan 7 years/100,000 miles/$0 deductible. All Toyota dealers must honor it. It retails for $1850. So you know your dealer flat out lied to you when he said that the lesser 7 year/75,000 mile plan retailed for $2500. BTW, if you want to get the 7 year/75,000 miles plan from Troy, it'll cost $200-$300 less than the $990 Troy charges for the 7 year/100,000 miles plan.
The finance guy is a liar and a sleazebag. If you really want the warranty tell him you'll buy Toyota's full warranty from him for no more than $850. Personally I believe the warranty is a waste of money for most people. If the warranty is expected to pay for itself then why are you buying a car with such poor reliability?
That 7 years/75,000 miles extended warranty that your dealer told you retailed for $2500 --- well if it's Toyota's best warranty, the Extra Care Platinum Plan, it retails for $1450 (for the $50 deductible) and $1500 (for the $0 deductible). See for yourself at Toyota Financial's website: Toyota Financial Services: Home
in order to get the dealer to shut up about the extended service contract i threatened to whip out my laptop and google for it right then, heh
if you buy that warranty today, you're giving the dealer a 3 year zero interest loan. invest your $990 for 3 years. then buy that warranty just before the 36000 / 3years is up if you must.
Thank you so much for this thread!! I picked up my Prius on Monday, and he was really good at not pushing the extended warranty, but explained it all. He said that the Platinum warranty retails at $2500 for the $0 deductible, but they have a "sale" right now and I can get it for $1900, but I would have to buy it within 90 days of taking delivery of the car. Like I said, he was really cool with not pushing it, but I'm really glad to know about warranty shack now. Thanks all!!
When we got our new Prius last week, the dealer told us we could "buy" the extended warranty (6 yrs/100K) for $1995 with no tax. They would refund the purchase price if it was never used. He said we had 30 days to cancel it. If we waited, we wouldn't get the warranty. I didn't know about this forum, else I would have said no. At least now I can cancel it (and not mention why!).
Yes, I would try to cancel it in person (not by phone). And don't walk out of the dealer without, at minimum, a written acknowledgment of the cancellation, and if you can get it, an actual check or credit card credit for the refund. Then I would wait until you approach the end of the basic warranty period of 3 years/36,000 miles to decide (1) whether to get the extended warranty, and (2) if you decide yes, then which extended warranty to get in terms of years and miles (you'll pay hundreds less than the current $990 price that Troy/WarrantyShack.com/Toyota of Greenfield charges for the 7yrs/100,000 miles/$0 deductible Platinum Plan, if you choose an extended warranty with fewer years and/or miles). Good luck PasoRed. And congrats on your new Prius. P.S. FYI, if you bought your Prius in California, the hybrid battery is warrantied for 10 years/150,000 miles.
I picked up the "Toyota" extended warrant at purchase (told them I wouldn't pay more than $990) and saved the difference between the ridiculous price quoted but now I notice that there is a $100 deductible. Is that the standard "Toyota" warranty or have I been screwed? I know that the PriusChat warranty is $0 deductible.
I bought a 2005 on saturday and the finance guy said that since it's got 44,000 miles I should probably get the extended warranty which covered everything up to 100,000 miles. He especially brought out the fact that the electrics on the car would probably need the warranty the most. What does the regular warranty, issued with the car, cover? Doesn't it cover the "hybrid" components for 100,000 miles. They wanted $2400 and I opted for it. I called yesterday to cancel.
if he bought it then the nice thing to do was transfer the warranty to you the not so nice thing would of been to cash in his warranty when he sold the car if you call toyota financial services and give them the vin number they will tell you if it has the extended warranty activated or not can you even buy the extended warranty at 44,000?? i thought you only had 36,000 to buy it
I bought it from Earnhardt Toyota. It's my understanding that the Toyota dealer can offer the extended warranty if the car has over 36,000 miles. My car is "certified used" which begs the question: Do I need the extended warranty?
You're right, a Toyota dealer selling a certified used Toyota can sell a Toyota extended warranty for the car. Personally, in my risk management analysis, I would never ever get the extended warranty for $2400. But for the $990 offered here for Toyota's best extended warranty for new cars, I think that's a reasonable insurance buy.
Be aware also that the 7-year warranty is only good for 4 years, as it starts from the date you put the car into service, not from the end of your bumper-to-bumper warranty.
