First, I'm at the top of the waiting list at a dealer that is selling me a Prius for MSRP minus $150. Not a big discount, but there are not port add ons, except the floor mats, and no other dealer fees. The price given includes out the door with all fees in this case just TTL and nothing else.

However, the last two allocations have not had the touring in the color we're looking for. So I started calling other dealers. I found one that has a 2008 in the color we're looking for, but they're selling for MSRP, so close enough.

This other dealer, in Sacramento, said that there's a $2000 factory incentive for 2008's right now and when they're gone, the price will $2000 more + the $500 MY2009 price increase, so $2500 more.

Now I notice this at my local dealer, yet a different dealer alltogether, because the factory sticker for a non touring #6 said $30344 - $2000 for a total of $28344 which is the MSRP that comes up in Edmunds. The #6 option was listed at $6550 instead of $4550. So what they did is added $2000 to the #6 option and then removed it again to make it look like a discount. Since this other dealer in Sacramento is doing the same thing, it makes me think that Toyota as corporation is trying to make it look to customers like they're providing a factory incentive....unless I've got it all wrong and they really are about to go up $2500????

That may have been the question in the title, but that's not the question in the post ;)

They might add an incentive if people purchasing 08's didn't put down any cash and cancel for the option of 09's

I think what you're seeing is the "Extra Value Package MSRP Discount." I'm looking at the sticker for my 2008 touring 6 and sub-total before discount was $30,223 and after package discount of $1,750 it went down to $28,473. I believe Toyota offered the package discount after the tax incentives had expired as a way to boost sales. I'm not sure if the 09's will have it though.

Hard to say with the wait list, anything could be possible to sell the stock that is in transport now that gas dropped a bit.

They are just juggling around the discount that's already there, to make you think you're getting something you are not.

Um, yea, but will it be gone for 09's making them $2500 more than '08s??? Edmunds already has pricing up for 09's and is only reporting the $500 more than the 08's with this supposed $2000 discount.

ya, find it hard to believe there is a factory incentive on a car that has a waiting list of customers, some of which are buying at MSRP plus dealer markups

You don't show a location and I don't know that factory incentives would vary by Toyota Region, but the only "factory incentive" available in the 2008 Prius in the Southeast Region is the $500 military incentive that expires 03/31/09. There have been cases reported, even here at PC, however of dealers adding stickers to the window or in worse case even replacing the the Monroney_Label, which is illegal but rarely enforced. Kuckily most dealers don't stoop to this level of deception.

You may also find the following informational: How to Read a New Car Invoice

I have no idea if this has anything to do with your $2000 factory incentive or not. Just thought I'd pass on the information. :noidea:

My window sticker also lists the $2000 factory discount, for a sticker total of $28,284 for a package 6 non-touring. I paid the window sticker price. However, from what I understand, this is not as you are thinking as a "special" or a buydown or a cashback thing - it was factored into the MSRP.

There has been a $2000 cash incentive on extras for the 2008. The dealer was correct in saying that, but that doesn't stop him from adding to the sticker price. The incentive is from Toyota, the extra profit goes to the dealer.

So then 2009's #6's are going to go up $2500. It's settled I guess.

Just for clarification, which price is settled for the 2009 #6's? Invoice Price, Base Price, MSRP, Dealer Sticker price, average market selling price? And is that for Los Angeles Region, San Franciso Region or for all Toyota Regions including Southeast Region which I'm in? :noidea:
