Yeah you have to wonder why that is. Is it due to new epidemiological information or just corporations successfully lobbying to get things their way?

I have a degree in horticulture so I have some familiarity with pesticides and herbicides. I avoid 2,4,5 T at all costs regardless of where it came from. It's just too persistent. The more I learned about pesticides in particular the more "organic" I have gone in my gardening. You still want to kill things, but there are better ways to do it than using Sarin, oops sorry I mean Sevin. And there are ways that don't have lingering effects.

Yeah we all have dioxin in our tissues. PCBs are another one that haa wormed its way into all of us everywhere. Back in the 70s a tranformer exploded in our neighborhood, apparently full of PCB coolant oil. A bunch of guys in environmental suits showed up the next day and cleaned up the area including digging up soil and hauling it off. Another one of those things I wonder about sometimes - but not for too long.

 

I'm from Michigan, so for me it's PBBs instead of PCB. PBBs were used as a fire retardant for children's clothes (TRIS). Some rocket scientist in Michigan got confused and mixed TRIS into cattle food supplements. This resulted in significant contamination with the eventual destruction and disposal of contaminated cattle, but not before a lot of PBB contaminated meat was sold to market.

My standard joke is that the steaks were great: you could leave them on the grill all day and they wouldn't burn.

Yes, and yes. A lot of the more severe health effects can take a couple of decades to show up. At one time, various halogenated solvents were considered so "safe" they were routinely dumped on the ground, or put down drywells. Oops

Consider that PCB was also considered a nice "safe" chem. Now if you find PCB, it's automatically a CERCLA/SARA issue. Our attitudes towards these chemicals have changed too - at one time it was considered okey-dokey to take one and croak "for the team."

Yes, it tends to take a long time to break down. The solubility is low, along with volatility, so once it enters a water system, it can linger a *long* time. The worst-case scenario is deposition into a freshwater lake, in theory it could take +5 decades

A lot of folks are unaware of how much "agent orange" or Dow Esteron Brush Killer was used in North America. It was a very popular herbicide and defoliant especially for utility companies and road medians and right-of-way clearing

As an example, Esteron was routinely applied to the Haines Pipeline in central Alaska, to control vegitation along the pipeline. This pipeline was used from the mid 1950's to the early 1970's to supply JP-4 and DFA (Diesel Fuel - Arctic) to Fort Greely, Eielson Air Force Base, and Fort Wainwright.

Back then was the peak of Chrome Dome, when a fleet of B-52's were orbiting 24/7 with constant aerial refueling. As you can imagine, that took an enormous amount of jet fuel. By some estimates, the Haines pipeline pumped 18,000 barrels - not gallons, BARRELS - a day for the entire history

At one time, PCB was considered "safe" and used PCB was even sprayed on gravel roads as a dust control measure.

You have 2 choices

Sell all your possessions that use or produce electricity

or

Find out what a 'safe' amount of EMF is and measure all your possessions. (Yes, the cats, too) Since there is no evidence that EMF is harmful unless it is ionizing, you will have to make your own determination what you consider 'safe'.
