Largest or most unusual Load Carried in Your Prius

We'll see if I can fit my hunting stuff and a dead deer in there if I shoot one this fall. How funny would that look?

 

I've not carried anything unusual yet in the Prius, although I did once carry a full-size MIG welder in the back. The suspension was complaining very badly.

But how about this for strange things in something a lot smaller.



That was before I got my Prius and was still using the electric Bubble car that is the City El.

8' ladder with the hatch closed. The top rested on the dash, though. It would've become messy had the airbag deployed.

 

I was going to pick up a 52" LCD TV from Best Buy. I looked online to get the dimensions of the shipping box and found it would fit. Cold not have been 1" longer, higher or wider. The 2 guys that wheeled it out laughed as I pulled my Prius around. They were scratching their heads as I pulled away with the hatch closed even.

OK, what support do I need to install in order to transport a "92 Firebird 305 TBI engine w/o trany? I figure the weight would destroy the deck lid so I'm thinking of something on top of the spare tire or removing the spare completely.

I got these two 2005 Volvo S60 power seats into the back of my Prius with room to spare. The guys at the junkyard couldn't believe it when I told them I brought my Prius and were still shaking their heads when I drove off.

Try a half sheet of 1/2 inch plywood in the back that should help. If'n your not in a big hurry wait till I get back and we can take my Highlander over to get it.

I have plenty of time for R&D.

I am worried about roof clearance as I'll need room for the hoist to get it in and out. I'm pretty sure I can limit it to 5" over intake height which would put me right above the TBI. That's why I'm thinking of using the spare storage space. Preliminary measurements indicate I might be able to get the oil pan in before the hoist hits anything.

 

Well, the best test is to haul ROCK!!!
I used to go up on the mountain and haul down
shale in my little Geo Metro. The best it could haul
in it's bucket-like rear end covered in plastic was about 12
buckets at 45 lbs each which is a quarter of a ton and it was
pretty wobbly coming down. I got a 2004 Prius with 'no bucket'
but I recently had a 67" TV delivered and the huge box it came in
6 feet long and 3 feet wide fit perfectly in the back of the Prius after
it was cut down to about 2 feet high. I went up on the mountain and
filled the box up with 18 buckets of shale and there was easily room for
probably 3 or 4 buckets more. That was 800 lbs (over 3/4 of a ton)
and the Prius carried it like it was hardly even there and no wobbling. When it rains again (to cut down on the dust) I will probably go
up and try for 1/2 of a ton. If the box was 4 feet wide I could
probably even beat that. What a work truck!!!!

 

I put my 46" LCD TV in the Prius without too much trouble. Wouldn't fit in the Honda Accord, because it has a narrower gap when you fold the seats down.

I've also put in 3 2x10's (lumber) that were cut to 100" (8'4", 254cm) with about 1" to spare (not touching the dashboard, hatch closed).

Put in old bluebird boxes on poles, but I didn't measure them (along with my hybrid bicycle). Not your typical item however. The bicycle has 27" road wheels but mountain bike style wide handlebars, it just barely fits in the back (seats down) without having to go to lengths like taking off the front wheel. I've got a technique down for putting it in and taking it out smoothly.

I'd be pretty cautious about a 1/2 ton of rock. The manual says 810 lbs (365kg) max, including people (like 4 Americans w/o luggage). At least go very slow on the bumps. For this, I'm sure you put your tire pressure above the doorframe recommendation.

 

800 lbs is less than 1/2 a ton. Still incredibly impressive, but not quite a 1/2 ton.
[2000 lbs is a ton. 1000 lbs is half a ton. 800 lbs is 2/5 of a ton]

 

I was able to fit a chair from Crates & Barrel and close the hatch.

Sorry. Yes, I got my fractions wrong
but you know what I meant. I had extra
air in the tires and there were no bumps
on the 10 mile downhill trip. Driving it
there was no sense at all of the load
in the back where as the Metro
wanted to swap ends.

How about a plane?

Well, it was radio controlled with 6 foot wingspan and all the supporting equipment including tools, fuel, pumps, starter, etc. This included 3 adult men as well.

Anyone in that hobby knows those planes are fragile. Mine arrived fine and it was the cheapest trip to the airfield I've taken.

Well, I took some photos with the 52" Samsung Series 7 LCD in my Prius. The width barely fit. At first, I could not get it in because of the black cargo net clips were in the way. I had to push it in from above those clips.

Samsung LN52A750 Package size (WXHXD): 56.7 x 39.0 x 17.3 in.

 

A 50-gallon gas water heater. I know it shouldn't be transported horizontally but that's the risk I take. It works just fine.

 

About 300 pounds worth of boxes and a desk the other week when I moved. I still managed 44mpg haha.
