Beautiful as ever, vtie, though something tells me that's not Belgium. ;)

(Hey, can I borrow your camera next week for my hiking in the Rockies?)

Here are a couple of pictures from a recent trip to Ecuador.

I apologize for the quality of the photographs, but I had very few options given the fact I had a point-and-shoot and was traveling to and fro!

The first two photos are of the famous Cotopaxi. This is the highest volcano (active) in Ecuador. It stands alone, enormous and magnificent. Recent snows gave the mountain a great cap!

These next two photographs show another volcano south of Quito and a bit further to the west (and south) of Cotopaxi. This is Tungurahua. It is smaller than Cotopaxi, but it is a much more active volcano, having had recent eruptions in 1999, 2002 and 2006. The first photo shows what appear to be clouds around the summit, but much of this is really steam from the volcano. Knowing this, you'll also be able to see the darker clouds of smoke. The second photograph is a much poorer image, but the angle is right, and it more clearly shows the opening at the summit and the smoke pouring out. Our road was covered with ash. In fact, the road was really a detour around the former highway that was buried under many feet of ash and damaged by water and ice flows resulting from blockage of a river by lava flows in the 2006 eruption.

I don't know about that last bit. The pictures of Carson pass succeed in making thoroughly homesick. No, those places aren't as grand as the Alps, but they still say "home" to me.

My parents still have a cabin on Caples Lake. Growing up, we hiked all over those peaks. Winnemucca and the big alpine meadow just to the north of it are really a magical places.

I gotta find a way to move back....

Ok, Ok... it's a bluff, not a mountain, but it IS in our back yard for us to enjoy. ;) You are all welcome to contact me if you ever want to explore the beautiful Lower Wisconsin Riverway.

I'm glad I could at least bring back fond memories. :)

You guys are inflicting me with wanderlust with all of these pictures. I'm headed to the White/Inyo mountains in 2 weeks and I'll try to get some new pics and maybe a new story to tell. Thanks for amplifying the excitement I was already feeling.
