Is this for real? Run a car on water?

Those moles of hydrogen are pretty light. :)

    H2O - 2 ATOMS HYDROGEN, 1 ATOM OXYGEN ....2 TO 1

    RIGHT RATIO

True, Hydrogen is lighter than Oxygen, but you still want to mix 2 atoms of H and 1 of O and bang = water, power!!!

3 atoms H, 1 - O you get heavy water!!! Now you can moderate the Neutron flow in your atomic pile in the backseat!!!

I did see a show on Discovery a few months back about various new ideas for fuel and one was water. Someone was working on it in Europe, I believe, but it was FAR from anything practical yet. Or affordable.

Sorry, but you are wrong on this one. You are correct that the ratio is two atoms of Hydrogen to one atom of Oxygen, but your mistake was stating the ratio in pounds. Your post said something about a 100 pound tank of Hydrogen and a 50 pound tank of Oxygen. Assuming you want the tanks to run out at the same time, you need a ratio of two moles of Hydrogen to one mole of Oxygen. In round numbers, one mole of Hydrogen has a mass of one gram, while one mole of Oxygen has a mass of 16 grams. The Hydrogen to Oxygen mass ratio should be 2 to 16, or 1/8: one pound of Hydrogen to eight pounds of Oxygen.

We all knew what you meant, but I wanted to set the record straight.

These claims of a water powered car are complete and utter nonsense - they were popular back in the 1970's during that era's energy crisis and previously as well, and these new claims are simply the same scams come back to enrich a new generation of thieves and crooks who wish to take your money for themselves.

Water, as we all know, consists of two atoms of Hydrogen and one atom of Oxygen written in the chemical shorthand as H2O. The reason that the atoms stick together is the covalent bonds formed by the electrons that the Hydrogen atoms have and the outer electrons of the Oxygen atom.

In order to break these bonds and separate the Hydrogen from the Oxygen it takes energy. One could use heat, kinetic or electric energy or any other form of energy one can think of, but no matter what the form of energy the amount is the same.

When Hydrogen and Oxygen combine, they release exactly the same amount of energy as it took to break them apart in the first place. There is not one scintilla of excess energy - the reaction is completely symmetric in energy used and released.

It is actually worse than this as any real physical system has losses and when you generate energy to break the atomic bonds of the water you will have to generate more energy than the reaction requires - and most of that energy escapes as waste heat doing you no good at all.

This is plain and simple 19th century physics that has been well tested, measured and thought about over the last 150 years. The people advocating water powered cars are liars, thieves, crooks and scam artists that deserve nothing but scorn and jail time.

A nit - heavy water is not H3O, which is not stable in the least, but rather chemically ordinary water in which the hydrogen in the water is not ordinary hydrogen which consists of one proton in the nucleus and one electron but rather an isotope of hydrogen called deuterium which consists of a nucleus of one proton and one neutron and the same one electron. This form of water is often written as D2O although most naturally occurring water made with deuterium has the other atom made of ordinary hydrogen, thus HDO.

On the Earth about one atom of 6,500 atoms of Hydrogen is Deuterium. You have many molecules of water made of it in your body, as do I.

Yep yer right, Its funny I as thinking about this post as I drove home this afternoon and the "Light Blub" came on....

But yeah you all get the general gist!!

    Thanks for the follow up!!

Yep your are correct, I will give you that one, ...I was just using that as a set up for the Atomic Pile in the back seat joke ....

I'd still like a "Mr Fusion Home Energy Unit" however. Old Doc Brown had the right idea!!!

Thanks for the info, ya just gotta love the diverse group of folk that make this group so much fun to read.

Not sure about your backseat, but deuterium (D, or 2H) seems to work very well in CANDU reactors

Thank you, that needed to be said

A great number of well-meaning but uninformed folks - hurt by high fuel prices - are willing to believe anything. If it was up to me, I'd subject the crooks to 50 lashes in the town square

To make a water powered car build a tower 40 feet high on the top of your car and on top of the tower place a large tank which you fill with water. Run the water down a large pipe and through a valve and nozzle onto a water wheel which is connected to the wheels. This would be as affective and practical as any other "run your car on water" scheme.

But reclaim the water by having it travel back up an Escher's channel and you've got a car that runs on the effects of gravity. Free power!!

If you don't believe me, I've included a very realistic picture.

I would like to clarify one item that I wrote, however, as upon rereading it was not as clear as I had hoped. The nucleus consists only of protons and neutrons - the electrons are all well outside the nucleus. In a neutral atom there are exactly as many electrons outside the nucleus as there are protons inside it as each electron has a -1 electric charge and each proton a +1 electric charge - the number of neutrons can't effect the electric charge of an atom as it is electrically neutral.

Since yesterday I found there is a small town in SC with approx 6 police cars that have converted to the gas - water system. The mayor claims 35% increase in mileage. They are using the water jar with soda and 12 volt electrical current to produce Browns gas that is fed into the engine with the normal gasoline injectors. There are quite a few web sites on this subject. I am still in the corner that says impossible but the thing seems to be growing!

It like the Wizard's First Rule: "People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool."

The counter to this rule? There is none, we are all susceptible. :D

I guess the placebo effect has them modulating the gas pedal with a softer touch, and voila, 35% increase.

    Proven with my wife:
On our Odyssey minivan she just would not be able to get above 18mpgs for the last 7 years she drove the van. It drove me nuts as I was able to achive 22mpgs easy. So we buy the Prius, she learns how to PROPERLY accelerate through the MFD feedback and she rolls home from a weekend in Michigan with a whopping 26mpg's!! That's about 35% savings through changes in driving habits alone.
Unless she installed a brown gas generator somewhere and I just don't know about it  ...which is highly unlikely since I'm the one who maintains and repairs all the family vehicles, Prius included.
