Integritys with over 35k miles @ 50+psi (pics)

    I decided to take some pics of my tires to show what kind of wear I'm getting with very high tire pressures. I do not know the exact number of miles on these tires because I ran a set of aftermarket wheels/tires for over a year but with 66k miles on my 2005 Prius I would guess I have well over 35k on the stock tires. Most of that time I've had the pressure over 50psi. Recently (since about Dec.) I've had the pressure over 60psi and I currently sit at 66/64.

    The pictures show a penny inserted into each of the 3 grooves of the tire (inner, middle, outer). This shows the relative depth of each tread groove.

    Not bad. At 36K my inner areas look about the same, but the outer edges are almost bald. I have a new set of take-offs waiting in the garage.

    Running @42/40, except the first 3000miles when the car wasn't mine.

    The first photo with the penny at the furtherest distance suggest a type of 'feathering' or 'scalloping' of the far, outer treads. Is that what I saw? (best detected by running fingers long the edge tread in both directions.)

    Was that far edge on the outside or inside of the tire when it was in service?

    Looks good for now, my guess is that you have 3/32" to 4/32" tread at the center of the tread while the outer edges may be at 2/32" or less.

    Do you plan to replace the tires before the rainy season starts this fall?

    If it is it is rather minor. It appears that the center line has the most tread left, followed by the innermost line (line closest to the strut) then the outer line (line closest to outer wheelwell) having the least tread. I think that may have more to do with hard cornering than anything yes? Could you better describe the technique for "feeling" a scalloped tire please. :) As for your last question, I'm not sure what you mean by "in service".

    Pinan, did you have your alignment checked?

    Patrick, I do not want to run these tires once the rain starts to hit real heavy but that isn't until after Dec. usually. I'll either have them replaced by then or I'll have to put my 17"wheel/tire combo back on until I can afford new tires. I am looking at something in the Nokian line right now as I like their company policies regarding sustainability and they appear to have some LRR models in either the WR or I3 tires.

    If you run your fingers around the outside and inside edges you can feel the scalloping or feathering.
    I didn't recognize the background and assumed they were not on the car.

    Sorry, I should have stated above the pics that they were still mounted on the car. I was worried about taking a clean pic without shadows and didn't event think about the fact they did't look like they were mounted. lol

    Looks like your wear across the tread is very even. Not surprising.
    So we can once again conclude that they're perfectly happy at
    those pressures, unlike my very telling pic of an Integrity run
    at Toyota's recommended pressure.
    .
    If all the specious arguments about "but you'll only get center
    wear!" had the slightest shred of merit, you'd expect that to
    happen due to the VERY ROUNDED PROFILE shown at the top of the
    underinflated tire ... and yet the exact opposite happened.
    .
    Why can we not manage to drive this through to people...

    That is the exact reason I took these pics. Sometimes seeing is believing. I will not state that all tires react this way to overinflation but the Integrity's are none worse for the high pressures. :)

    Treadwears looks just about perfect to me. Perhaps just a tiny bit more wear on the outside than the inside of the tire.

    How often do you rotate your tires?

    That's dangerous, especial for 3+ year old tires with in excess of 35K miles on them. I hope you are at least running nitrogen in them.

    Most likely about 78% I would think. Maybe higher, doesn't the oxygen leak out?

    Or possibly oxidizes some of the inner surface material.

    As for exploding tires and stuff from over pressure, nonsense. Heat is the enemy and that comes with lower inflation pressures and bad alignment.

    I don't have a set schedule. If I notice the fronts having more tread than the rear then I'll rotate them but honestly, the only time they get rotated is when I try to put my aftermarket wheels back on and then they get all mixed up when I go to reinstall the factory ones. lol

    Sure. The prior owner ran the tires at around 26psi for 3000 miles though. Hence the problem, most likely.

    Funny. He stated that since he lived up in the hills (maybe 1000 ft higher than me) he kept them under-inflated so they wouldn't explode when he went "down the hill", LOL. I tried to explain....he didn't get it. Heh

    Makes you wonder what the wear vs tire pressure curve looks like for this tire. What is the optimum pressure for wear? Goodyear rates the Integrity for 50000 miles --for warranty purposes, I guess.

    I was told by my salesman that the tires can only be rotated side to side, not back to front as the back are larger than the front. Is this not true?
