First Oil Change Today at Dealership

    I took "Kermit" (hey, it ain't easy being Green) in for his first oil change and tire rotation today at the dealership where I bought him - Toyota of Pasadena. I had a good experience with the Service Dept. there shortly after I bought the car (when I needed to have the steering wheel centered), so I had confidence that it would go well. And for the most part, it did.

    I'll admit to being a little apprehensive after reading so much on these forums about dealerships overfilling the oil, or putting in the wrong grade of oil, or both. So when I met with the service advisor I brought these points up. It was interesting to note that the oil was actually a ittle high (about 1/8" above the top dimple on the dispstick) when I bought the car...it was actually delivered that way from the factory. So this time I wanted to be sure it was right. And lo and behold, when I got the car back this morning, the oil level was full just up to the dimple, but not a millimeter more. Hey, they did it right! Now I know some will claim it's better to have the oil somewhere between the two dimples, but honestly I'm just happy that it wasn't overfilled.

    The only thing they got wrong was when I asked them to reset the tire pressures to 40/38 (front/rear) after the rotation. Seems they forgot to do that as when I checked, the rear tires were about 2 PSI above the fronts. So clearly they had merely rotated the tires front to back without looking at or adjusting PSI. No big deal, that was easily corrected. :)

    I have a feeling this is going to happen with me. I guess I will just check before I leave the shop. But then I would have to wait more if its not right.

    Yeah...I'd also recommend you check the oil level before you leave the dealer. That way in case they overfill it you can have them put it back up on the rack and drain it down to the proper level before you drive home.

    *Always* check the oil level yourself before driving away from an oil change, no matter who does it. You can find a lot of gruesome mistakes before they become expensive.

    Yes, some will claim that. But I lowered the oil from full to half-way on my new 2008 and haven't been able to detect any difference in mileage.

    Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act using an outside service, other than the dealer, for a service that is not provided by the dealer at no additional charge, does not in itself void the warranty. Could that imply that if the "first oil change", which I beleive is free, is provided by other than the dealer, the dealer could cite, not having had it done by an authorized dealer, to void warrany? Just I though.

    This one was free, because I had a coupon for a free oil change from when I purchased the car. Actually, the coupon gives me the 1st, 3rd, and 5th oil changes for free, so long as I pay for the 2nd and 4th.

    The regular price for the oil change and tire rotation service is $75, but since I'll essentially be getting five or the price of two with the coupon, it actually works out to $30 each on average. Not a bad deal.

    I have a question regarding 1st oil change. I have always done my 1st oil change on a new car around 500 to 700 miles. It's old school. The idea being that, microscopic particles from breaking in a new engine, rings, bearings, etc., along with any small particulates that may be left in the engine from manufacturing, will be in that first oil change. I know that current production methods are much better and I believe that they now do an engine break-in at the plant. Actually, I have a two part question. First, does the engine come with a special break-in oil in which case it needs to go the full 5000 on the first change. Some cars did this in the past, recommending 1st change @ 500. If not, can I go to a full synthetic immediately! I seem to remember some posts that said wait till 30,000 to allow engine to break in properly, that the synthetic would slow the engine break-in time frame.

    I did a used oil analysis on my 1 week old 2008 at 870 miles and everything looks super clean. I'm going to stick with Toyotas' service schedule and change at 6 months or 5000 miles.

    Nobody really seems to be sure who does or doesn't use special breakin oils these days, AFAICT. I don't think it's needed anymore, and I also don't think you need to worry about changing first oil early.

    Rumor is that 2008 factory fill is 0w20 synthetic. I plan to use Mobil-1 0w20 synthetic for the life of the car and do oil analysis every change.

    Oops! Mucked up as I didn't check the oil level or the PSI (when I requested 42/40). Guess I'll be checking that tomorrow morning. BTW, first oil change as well and I don't expect to go back to the dealer.

    I sincerely appreciate the response. I'm not trying to be a wise-gut, but;
    If they ship it with 0W20 SAE and recommend 5W30 SAE for future oil changes; Then doesn't that make the 0W20 SAE a break-in viscosity? I think I'll go with having the dealer do the 1st oil change at 5K. I have to assume that whatever viscosity and/or special additives may be in the shipped Prius is what they intended to be there for the 1st 5K.

    I'd recommend you just go with what Toyota recommends. At 4500 miles or so, your maintenance light should go on. Let Toyota dealer change your oil every 5000 miles or 6 months. No special break-in concerns, other than just drive gently and not too fast for first 1000 miles.

    I'd recommend Synthetic oil, but if you want to save money, regular oil may be OK. (Or maybe not. At least one person here had bad experiences with regular oil.)

    Toyota recommends 5w30, but I've heard 0w20 is better, as long as it doesn't get too hot like in Nevada or South Arizona etc. Toyota dealer may put 0w20 in by default. 5w30 should be fine though.

    Kizzy, WOW. I opted for the service plan and at my 5K they didn't realize it so they tried to charge me for it, $49.99. After the mixup was fixed the bill stated that services cost $40.00 with total due $0. I just had the 10K service and again service cost was $40.00 and total due was $0

    I don't know where the extra $9.99 they were going to charge me came from and I didn't ask how much the 10K would be, but $75? Geeze, that's stiff.

    Yeah 75$ is a total ripoff if its just an oil change and tire rotation...

    Kizzy, It'd only cost you about $20 in gas to drive over the Grapevine and into Hanford for a service. I'll find out how much the 10K service is Monday. Wouldn't that be a hoot. It costs less to drive 2 hours for service than to do it at your local dealer.

    Thanks Jammin012. $75 is steep, I know...but I didn't fight it this time because it was free. At my 10K/1 Year oil change, the situation will be different, believe you me. :)

    To any of you in SoCal, please let me know how much your dealerships typically charge (along with the name of the dealership) for the oil change / tire rotation, so I can have some ammunition to bargain with next time I go in for service at my dealer.

    Sorry, I meant 10K not 15K.

    I did notice with the Jag a huge difference in pricing between the dealerships. The 80K service in San Diego would have cost around $800 but in Fresno the cost was $450. They are the only game in their respective cities so maybe it has to do with their economic base. I don't know....

    After you find out on Monday, definitely let me know what your local dealer charges for the typical "every 5,000 mile or 6 months" oil change and tire rotation service. Also, what is the name of the dealership? I'm hoping that citing the competition will help me bargain down the price at the dealership I use.
