I got my 2007 and was one of the last ones in my area. Same dealer now has another 2007 similar options, mileage for $4000 more than I paid. They will get it too.

Supply/Demand. Good timing for me I guess

Servco Toyota in Honolulu says you never pay over MSRP. I didnt believe it at first, but its true! I paid a little less than MSRP including TT&R. I know its not the best deal ever but considering the demand for the prius i am happy it didnt have a $3000 "market value adjustment" :)

Panama City Toyota refuses to overcharge...their owner says it's unethical according to a salesman there. They want repeat life long customers and they have them.

Same with Stokes Brown in Beaufort, SC. They are pleasant to deal with, charged MSRP, and also said similar things re: life long customers, etc.

However, my sales person told me they are no longer taking deposits for the wait list. A week ago he said it was 12 weeks. End of May he said 2 weeks.

Fortunately I ordered early and have a Spectra Blue coming around 6-20:)

Definitely keep checking for good dealers like these....

I thought that the question here is to name dealerships who are not charging a premium. Why then are people offering their personal opinion about the issue? It's not helpful at all and wastes a lot of interested minds swimming through the thread of mostly unsolicited opinions.

No they won't. Toyota's official position is that the dealers are free to charge what they wish.

If Toyota is smart they will remind their dealers that MSRP is a figure they (Toyota) came up with and to charge over that amount could be considered gouging & thus drive business to the competition

I think this statement likely reflects future events very well. Toyota has a leadership position for sure right now...but I don't count out Honda or other manufacturers catching up soon. Even if they did so only slightly technologically...that gap shrinkage combined with any residual hard feelings over high prices and poor supplies could end up hurting badly as time goes on. I like to think of the Prius as the Wii of the auto industry...accidentally/kinda on purpose/backhandedly under supplied on a consistent basis. I think Nintendo is in danger of the same sort of scenario as well...

The Toyota dealership in Walnut Creek is selling at MSRP, but there is a waiting list (of course). The gal in the internet sales department is extremely professional (and nice). I have a friend on the waiting list over there and he is very impressed with the dealership.

I realize you said that you are looking in Southern California, but if you can't find a good dealer down there, a one way airline ticket to Oakland may not be too expensive. Also, their dealership is about 1/5 of a mile from the Walnut Creek BART station. Good luck.

You're not in touch with reality. Have you read whats been said here? The dealers can charge whatever they want, and in fact Toyota cannot, by federal law, force independent dealer owners to charge a specific price for a vehicle or service contract. Its a violation of antitrust laws. Its called price fixing.

MSRP stands for Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price. It is a suggestion. The reason why it is a suggestion is because of the aforementioned threat of price fixing

Drive people to the competition? Its no different with the competition.

You can believe that this is not the case, but you may as well believe in Santa Claus too.

Your original statement is not entirely wrong though. You are correct, there will soon be more competition and that it will fix the problem. Where you get it wrong though is in believing Toyota will stop dealers from charging over MSRP. They won't have to, the market will stop that because increased competition will decrease demand for the Prius.

The issue now is demand is greater than supply. More supply or less demand equally fixes the problem. What about apples? What apples cost where you live may be more or less than what they cost where I live due to the relative supply and demand. Are you going to complain about that too?

I think all American children should have to take a business 101 course. We'd all be a lot better off.

Do a search for Earl Stewart Toyota of North Palm Beach FL & have a look see at his NO dealer fee & NO "market adjustment" pricing.
For a Prius, well worth the flight there.
We dealt with Peter Rosenblum in internet sales.
    Good luck !

Yeah--many dealerships are charging a premium right now. I got a call this morning from the first dealership I visited about 6 weeks ago. They said they had 3 Priuses on the lot. I said how much. One was a used '06 with 15K miles: $27.9K. The other 2 were new. Price was $3K over list, $1.5K over list if you were a so-called "internet" customer. They said they had people who were willing to pay. I walked out of this dealership 5 weeks ago when they low-balled my trade--which was not a gas guzzler.
I got my price at a dealership closer to me--but that was a week before the big rush for Priuses which occurred the 2nd week in May--when oil futures went through the roof.
This is not the time to buy a Prius--unless you can find an honest dealer who will stick with the sticker price. Pay for the gas, and throw the bums out in Washington in November who aren't doing anything about it.
