Morning TV on my MFD during commute to work

I'm not saying PriusChat would be liable -- it would be very hard to do so -- but providing a forum for the discussion of illegal activities is not a good idea. Essentially, PC has nothing to gain from allowing this.

 

Forums are the perfect place to discuss these ideas. There are usually other people that may share the same modification idea. PC is good for soaking up the information and processing it. Either way, the information is there now for someone to use. It may be for a TV mod, or just something that may require similar bits of information. It's searchable, and it expands the amount of info available to the user.

Modifications and the law, regularly, don't mix. If it makes you feel any better, you can assume people are modding for off-road use only... kind of like when I go buy a bong and say it's for tobacco use only.

 

I disagree to a point, Brian. The "Volvo Seats in a Prius" thread was an exhibition of someone's interesting project and explored the possibility of reducing risk for people that might do the same mod. The biggest concern on that thread was the side airbags. Of course there was mention of the bad things that could happen if the project didn't consider the airbags and I made one of the original comments just to make sure the OP had at least thought through that aspect of the project. Eventually there was some good discussion on how to make the airbags work in the Prius but we almost never got to the risk reduction posts because people kept flaming him every other post. The OP lost his temper and modified his car in spite (some might say because of) some very sage advice on safety concerns.

I want Volvo seats in my Prius but I will never do it because I am not confident the airbag configuration is safe. But I would never have made a truly educated decision without looking at both sides of the arguments and problem.

If Chris had been left alone after getting the message then maybe he would be willing to honestly critique his modification -- safety concerns included. Haven't you heard that an alcoholic only listens to someone that's been there?

Actually, this conversation is kind of ironic coming from me since aside from the internet, TV is my biggest hobby. You'd think I'd be all for watching it anytime, anywhere, but I have to draw the line somewhere, at least for myself. In fact, about 15 years ago I took a car trip with a guy who brought a VCR and handheld TV to use in the backseat. He even brought the remote because "it has features on it that the VCR does not."

It was not my intention to cause trouble, I was just shocked that anyone thought watching TV while driving would not be a distraction.

I did a little experiment on my way to work this morning. I tried to determine how long I was comfortable looking at the MFD or rear-view mirror before feeling like I needed to look back at the road.

Result: not even 1 second. I was comfortable looking for about half a second -- just enough time to absorb what I saw, and then looked back at the road. Not sure how much enjoyment I'd get out of half second glances at a TV show, but maybe that's just me.

While it's true that I think you can safely glance at a dash-mounted TV provided that you spend no more time looking at it than you would at the energy monitor or GPS screen, I do think that a TV will make prolonged glances more likely. The energy screen stops being interesting after about 1 second, but TV won't.

I'd really like an in-car TV for the few times a year that I get stuck in a traffic jam on the interstate where nobody moves for an hour or more. There are probably other similar situations in which it'd be very useful and quite safe to use.

 

I'm guessing that EVERYONE who has created an auto crash because he/she was distracted thought (and most probably still thinks) in this delusional, detached from reality sort of way.

You want to risk the lives of innocents because you can't stand to miss today's episode of The Peoples Court! Go risk your own life, but leave the innocents out of the equation.
