The CFO of my household has approved the purchase of a new costco television with the stipulation that it must fit entirely inside the prius w/ seats folded down. What do you think, 36"? 42? 46?

That's a complicated question. Are you including the size of the box, or will you take the TV out of the box prior to transport?

I bought a 42" plasma TV a couple of years ago. The TV itself is about 3 inches deep (measured at the thickest area), but the box itself was probably 6'x4'x2'.

I got a 42 inch Panasonic unboxed to fit on the rear seats, upright with the doors closed. Something on the box said "transport upright" so I didn't try to lay it flat through the hatch. Good luck!

Well, when the CFO says head on down to Costco for a TV, I wouldn't even measure it, I'd be down at Costco so fassstttt!!

If it didn't fit, I'd MAKE it fit, bring along my saws-all. :der:

I'm still using a huge wooden enclosed circa 1980's TV with rabbit ears.

Could your CFO talk to my CFO and work something out?

    Don't succumb to Affluenza.

Do you really NEED the largest flat screen TV that could fit in a Prius?

I know several people who went out and purchased big honkin' flat screen TVs, only to get them home and realize they now have a big honkin' flat screen TV which looks out of scale with the rest of their TV viewing room. One even feels like sitting in the front row of a movie theater because they sit only eight feet away. It looks stupid.

I have a 17-inch laptop which looks three times larger than the TV sitting nine feet away.

    Now wait a minute.
I'd look foolish watching a big screen TV only 8ft away if there's a good movie on and a hot buttery bowl of popcorn.

    Oh no...
    Now I've done it.

I've said the hot delicious "popcorn" word.

(dashes to the store for some popcorn)

That's a relative measure... an opinion, which may change over time as things change.

So does every 4:3 CRT ever made when watching a widescreen movie in any format. Yet, people accepted it that way for decades. Pan & Scan along with black-bars on a screen not even remotely close to the size it was presented in the theater was a tremendous sacrifice. Now, prices have caused a paradigm shift.

For many, that means a dramatic quality increase. I'll take that any day over mindless hours of the lesser stuff.

Picked up a 52" Sony LCD yesterday for my sister. Wouldn't fit laying flat in the box, but fit in perfectly fine when removed from the box (at the store).

A plasma TV will travel fine laying flat, have done it more than once, just take it slow going over speed bumps and lookout for pot-holes in the road.

I couldn't fit my 37" LCD TV in the back while inside the box, but my new 40" fit just fine.

Samsung 50" plasma fits to the limits. I've done it. TV and new surround sound both fit in the prius, no modifications.
Oh ya, that was inside the box also. No unboxing anything. Straight from shelf to trunk.

If you lay the box flat someone will stack something heavy on top. The box will crush down against the glass and break it. So they tell you "Do not lay flat!" Not because the TV will suffer, because the shipping monkeys will break it if you do! I laid my 43" Samsung flat in the anti-Prius (2001 Nissan Pathfinder) with no ill effects (I am not a shipping monkey!) ;)

Example of shipping monkeys - UPS (also known as OOPS!)

BTW, although the anti-Prius was larger than my Prius, it couldn't carry as large an item. The hatch opening was actually smaller and the space between the rear shock towers was smaller!
