Yeah, and I'm fine with all of that. I expect to be hyper-miling 90+ % of the time and expect it to be fun.

But we can't deny that performance isn't important. Prius would be useless for most of us if it came with a 10 HP ICE, although it could still be driveable at lower speeds and the FE could certainly be higher.

There's no reason that engineers wouldn't design for power performance as well as economy and emissions performance at the same time. There are many aspects of the Prius, such as low CD etc. that enhance all 3 types of performance.

Yes, there are always trade-offs to make and times when one approach that favors only one type of performances must be chosen.

But if power performance could be enhanced, on demand, when no economy performance is lost during times when high power is not needed, I'm all for that. Enable it with a WOT switch if possible.

If this hypothetical high power mode also causes more emissions, then so be it, IMO, as long as the driver is aware of this and doesn't "abuse" this higher pollution mode excessively.

There ARE times when higher acceleration rates can improve overall economy or safety. Maybe relatively few times, depending on your opinions, but this is arguable at least IMO.

You are asking for something that can't be done with a simple switch. The balance of power and efficiency for the Prius is already optimized for its intended use. If the driver asks for full power, the Prius delivers full power. What you want is a "Sports Prius", with a different trade-off between performance and efficiency.

No matter how MG1 and MG2 are utilized, Prius has only two power sources, ICE(76hp) and Battery(34HP).
If you double the battery, you'll see more system power like Plug-in Prius.
    TOYOTA: News Releases

If you used up the battery power, Prius becomes 76hp ICE only vehicle like hill climbing at Pikes Peak. :)
Prius already designed to supply the max power from ICE and battery when you do full throttle.
Please be aware that ICE can't run 4000rpm or something at 10mph.

Todays industrial motors have efficiency ratings in the high 90's. About 97-98%. Industrial motors have had better than 90% efficiency for about 50 years. That 50% number is incorrect.

    Hi All,

According to Ken's post, instead of 3000 RPM at 15 mph as I said in my post, its 2300 RPM at 15 mph (24 kph).

Thanks for the posting that chart Ken.]

So (2300/4000) * 76 is 44 hp, plus 34 from the battery is 78 HP at that speed. This assumes flat torque characteristic of engine.

Looking further on the chart we see that the lowest speed for max HP is about 44 mph (or 70 kph). Asuming this chart is for the HSD. As this link Toyota Prius - 2008 Performance & Specifications says that the engine has 76 HP at 5000 RPM, yet the chart does not go above 4000. Is this actually a THS 1 chart ?

whats the foot pounds of torque you get when you get silly at the green light?

It's pretty good and enough to out run many a small sporty car. At least for the first few blocks. I have done it!

Isnt it like 300ftLbs? The same as my V8 expedition was !
