about 320--though I've been up to 350, I try to stop the gas station attendent from overfilling it, but they hate when I touch the pump (and it's illegal) here in NJ. Of course, in the winter, with the heat on, it's lower. I should tell you, I have a short commute, almost all stop and go driving, with almost nothing over 40mph.

9G-Man, great score! Looks like you had the perfect temperature range too, 75 degrees on the pic. I do my best in the 60-75 degree range, no AC nor Heat, I've reached 62 mpg over 520 miles with temps roughly in that range this spring. We had some 94 degree days last week, dropped me down to only 58 because of the AC. Time to fill up now, I've gone 540 miles and just dropped to the last pip, but not flashing. Hope I make it to Costco tonight  Hot temps just around the corner, I think I can say goodbye to 60 mpg until the fall.

Lots contribute to that 60mpg... EBH, TP 40/38, Scangage, 40 minute commute weekdays and a route conducive to fairly good mpg (although the same route I've taken since 1991) half freeway half surface streets.

This time of year when temps avg 60-65 F, I can achieve 600 miles between fillups. Right now, I'm at 578 miles and my last pip is flashing. Looks like I might be a little shy this time :(.

I have been mapping the mileage per PIP for the last year relative to outside temps. Once I get the data into a readable format, I will post.

OK! I'll admit it. I have ran out of gas twice in my Prius. The first time was on accident. I was over 400 miles and just wanted to see how far I could go on a full tank. I was just around the corner from a gas station so I ran on battery for maybe 1/4 of a mile. The second time was truly on purpose, just to see how far I could get on my battery alone. The battery took over immediately and I went about 1 mile to the gas station. The battery indicator only had two bars which really freaked my out!! I will not try it again. Lesson learned. It is nice to know you can go a little farther on battery alone (but not very much farther).

Done it a number of times with 2 PIPs still left. Depends on how much gas you had in the tank to begin with (I don't overfill) but a stretched fuel bladder helps plus obviously good MPG you can too get >500 miles per tank. For me this is not very important and would never risk running out of fuel. Rather it is a by product of good FE.
    Good luck,

I have done it on numerous occasions as well. I quite often hit 500 miles with 4 or 5 pips left.

My last tank was 979 miles at 86.7mpg and my record was 1056 at 86.9mpg. My current tank is at 285.8 miles with 9 pips showing.

:eek:OK now that begs the question: how you do that (technique; route ... etc.) or do you have someone push you (just kidding) but if so help them by putting it in neutral and don't put your foot on the breaks.;)

The only reason I'm joking is because your stats are so impressive :first:

Don't worry about the joking. I have no problems answering questions from people that I perceive are asking for the sake of gaining knowledge and not just to stir up controversy. I only hope that my recent posts are not seen as disruptive or inflammatory. My intent is to present evidence that shows what our awesome cars are truly capable of so that none of their potential FE is left on the table. I mean, why settle for 40-45mpg if 65-70+ is possible. Many years ago, it was thought by all of the experts of the time that the human body was not physically able to break through the 4min/mile barrier. As we all know, that barrier has been surpassed and sub-4minute times are now common. I don't want to let the experts dictate what FE is possible. I'm not saying their information is faulty but just perhaps not yet complete as was the medical evidence that said sub-4min. miles weren't possible.

To answer your question on how I do it, I use a combination of P&G and trip planning. The trip planning involves the actual route as well as the time of day and traffic patterns that may be encountered. I try to plan my trips so that I can stay on rural country roads and avoid highways as much as possible. When I do need to travel in traffic, I pay close attention to traffic lights, stay in the right lane, and try to stay out of other people's way. And for the record, I do not condone nor do I practice drafting semis/larger vehicles at close distances. Those vehicles are usually traveling too fast for my FE tastes but I do acknowledge the practice does produce positive FE results. However, the risks far outweigh the benefits. If I do follow another vehicle that is going slow enough, it is at 2-3 seconds or more back. As I was telling someone recently, drive your car like you would ride a bicycle. If you were on a bicycle, you wouldn't keep pedaling to a stop sign or signal and you would tend to build up speed before going up a hill and coast down the other side. You would try to conserve your momentum. Feel free to PM me if you would like more information and we can talk by phone if needed or find a way to meet in person. Thanks.

I have an 08 and after reading all of you guys comments about how to improve MPG,
THIS MORNING .... I did Improved from 56.1 MPG to 58.7 MPG in city without using AC base on 31 MPH and 50 MPG to 52.5 MPG base on 65 MPH with AC. I've tried everything to improve my MPG. Below is what i have done :
    1. Fill gas half of a tank to reduce heavy weight on a car
    2. Set temp to 73
    3. Tire Pressure 45 PSI
    4. Slowly step on gas penal
    5. Accelerate to 36 MPH on 40 MPH (IN CITY ONLY)
    6. Release gas penal all the way for only 2 second and slowly step on gas penal to keep your speed on 31 MPH.
    7. Shut off AC
    8. Release gas penal if you see a stop light in RED Color ( This will always save you a lot of gas everytime you do it)

i got about 525 Miles when i first got it and now it has 5000 Miles.
It depend how you drive. I have tried to use a cruise control on the way to Las Vegas but believe it or not i got less MPG than a normal drive.
For me i suggest you not to use a CC when you drive. Some others they find driving with CC is better.
    * If you used a CC then u will not able to take more control on your speed especially driving up hill. I tried to use CC driving up hill and found that engine sound was really loud, so i just have it into a normal drive.

Please don't get me wrong on CC drive.

people tend to get bad MPG heading to Vegas because your mostly going uphill

im not a firm believer or follower of having to change your driving habits , but i do care about the little tricks you can do to increase fuel use (i.e. tire psi, higher AC setting etc.)

driving the FE way doesnt work for me LOL i always revert back to my original way of driving no matter what i do, i frustrate myself haha, lol

even when i drive my usual normal way i get about 42mpgs avg hwy and streets so im happy with that unless theres a trick of getting more mpg with out having to change your driving style, then im in it

My best tank with my 07, was 599 miles last summer.

I didn't want to risk running out of gas

The last 6 months I'm averaging 49.7 mpg without any modifications, special route planning and with little heating. Tire pressure is at around 44psi, the vehicle is driven 16 miles/day to and from work as well as on I95.

It will be an interesting summer.

Every time I think I'm doing pretty good I read a thread like this and after reading what diamondlarry does I feel so inadequate. Right now I am at 465 miles (54.6 on the MFD) with one solid PIP since 431 miles. With my very short commute I should not complain, since previous best was 459. I have never let it go until it flashed before. I really would like to say I made 500, but if I run out of gas I would get a ration of manure from my other half and it's just not worth it. Is there anything I need to know about driving around with a can of gas in the car? I could probably do that without him finding out - as long as I don't store it in the cellar next to the gas water heater with the pilot light:scared:

I have 1200 miles on my 08 Prius and have only had to take gas out of the tank twice. The first time after 374 miles when the last bar on the full side of the gauge started blinking and the second time when I put it in the garage and didn't want the gas to spill on the floor.;) My only regret is that the rebate on our gas credit card is getting smaller.

Just don't give up trying to improve. Since you have a short commute, you are doing quite well. When I first started hypermiling I learned pretty quickly that I was enough of a challenge to myself without having to worry about others.

I went down to 7 pips sometime today and I'm at 375.1 miles with 86.3 on the MFD and 85.6 on the Scanguage. I'm on track for 1K+ for now.

Thanks for the encouragement. I decided to go out to get milk, then decided to take a ride up by where there was an apartment fire this afternoon. Ended the tank at 485 miles (chicken that I am), 54.9 on the MFD. It took 8.73 gallons to fill which calcs to 55.55. Just as I was writing down my readings waiting for the pump I always use, the last PIP started flashing and there was a beep! Last couple of tanks have been way off from the SG stats. This time it had the correct distance but read 49.5 mpg, 0.3 gallons to empty. (Wonder if I set it back to a 9 gallon tank for the winter and didn't put it back to 10 yet) It consistently read 5 mpg less than the MFD throughout the entire tank. Maybe I entered something wrong at the last fill. Oh well, we start all over again in the morning.

Hope you hit your 1K+ diamondlarry. Would love to see a picture of that:cool:
