I have had my Prius for 3 weeks now. And i have become accustom to the many sounds that it makes the 1 thing i am not yet use to is sometimes when I come to a stop it seems that my car shakes a bit. there is no better way to describe it. has this happened to anyone else? is this normal? Also how do you know when you should refuel. I try to let it go as long as possible it gets to one bar left but now light ever turns on saying that i need gas. Is there a light that turns on?

The shudder is normal as the ICE turns off when stopped. The last blip on the gas gauge will blink when gas is getting very low, but I personally never let it get that far. I try to fill up when there are 2 to 3 blips and sometimes more. No reason to let the gas run all the way down.

I noticed the shake a bit too....but it seems if I am watching the MFD, I can see that it goes along with the ICE stopping. Seems stronger when the engine is warming up and I am stopping.

Can I add one other Is this Normal? Something I noticed today is that I can be parked, I power up with my foot on the brake and take my foot off right away - staying in Park....and the car will roll an inch or two. The first time that happened I went to slam on the emergency brake but the roll stopped. I also notice a bit more 'roll' when shifting into park and letting off the brake.

    Anyone else notice this?

    Thanks

The shudder when the ICE stops is more noticeable when the ICE is still warming up. Once it is warmed up you have to really pay attention to feel it.

I have always thought the "Park pin" was a little loose in the Prius. I have had cars that roll an inch or two and some that barely moved, like my 2007 Camry.

My guess is that it has to do with how big the "Park pin" is and how big the detents are.

    Correct on both.

The engine stops at a particular point that makes restarting efficient. Sometimes it misses this stopping point and the Prius has to crank it around for another try, which makes it shudder. This is normal, and is more common with cold engines and new engines.

As for rolling forward, there is a little play in the parking pawl (it's not really a pawl, but that's what they call them on most cars, so I'll stick with the common terminology.)

I've had my Prius for a few days now, and I can sense when the ICE turns off, especially at red lights, for example. To me, it's just enough to know what is happening. That's very fuel efficient--all cars should have that feature. We have too many traffic lights in this country--especially at T-intersections where they aren't needed. Local authorities pay no attention to energy conservation when it comes to traffic lights. In France, they use roundabouts, or rotaries, to avoid traffic lights.
Back to the Prius, it is remarkably quiet and seamless--an engineering marvel. You can barely sense the ICE/electrical transition--and driving with just one gear is a dream-- Kind of like driving a spaceship?
