Cabin filter - alternative

i really want to see some picture's if you have them?
and i think when the airflow is less inside the car then it Will take longer to cool/warm the car or the AC Will go to a higher fan speed.
so maybe you use more fuel and the savings of this cheaper DIY air filter replacement go's away

 

Get a proper filter.

 

There is no furnace filter that will "Counter the emissions of those diesels".

Just hit the recirc button on the wheel to keep from sucking it into the cabin.

The cabin filter is reusable, a little detergent and warm water will clean it up just like new.

 

I don't like the motor's chances of survival in that circumstance. Why gamble? Go back to OEM and as the previous post suggests, use recirculate.

You will need more filter area to redue the back pressure of the Filtrete. You might try one of this Gore Clean-Stream shop vac filters. Cut out the element and put it into a homemade frame. That will handle allot of the particulates, but allot of the diesel truck smell is NOX gas. You will need a activated charcoal filter for that.

Any thoughts of using a carbon filter, or hepa filter to do a better job than the factory filter. I hate it when I turn on the air in a 3 month car and it stinks. Being a non smoker, I seem to notice the smell more.... jf

 

No doubt you could rig something up with activated charcoal. As far as commercial filters, anything that fits in the tray (about 1 inch thick) ought to be fair game. But if it is obviously making the HVAC fan motor labor, that will probably end up costing you some money.

Way too much particulate matter enters the cabin through opening doors and windows to make a low-pass HEPA-style filter very effective. The OEM filter is designed to strain out the big chunks and bugs, not give you a cleanroom. If you object to the Toyota filter (available fairly cheaply online), Bosch makes a filter that's a little beefier and the right size. What's the point of using a Filtrete filter when you have big gaps around the edges?

It's easy to add an activated carbon filter. Honeywell makes "universal" carbon filters for their room air filters. The material comes in a roll, just cut a square the same size as the OEM filter and set it on top of the pleated filter. It does help a bit with stinky exhaust from outside, or inside.

 

I have the Ecoquest air purifier. Its helping to get rid of the ac smell. I have had it about 2 years and finally got around to putting it in the Prius. It works really good. I tried loading a pic but got a database error. I think cause its 3m pic. Forgot to take a smaller image.The link below is to there brand new one. There pricey but they really work well. There strong enough to use in your house and come with a wall wart.

I too have been looking for a better-than-OEM cabin filter that would help with my allergies. Coastal is no longer able to get the PIAA filter from Japan that was able to arrest particles under 1 micron. Check out the WIX brand, or the BLITZ reusable, both available at the Coastal website. The WIX is actually pathogenic; it will kill bacteria by stabbing them with microscopic spikes that cover the filter. Pretty cool, eh? The blitz has a Titanium Dioxide coating that "renews" the filter when placed in the sun (after wahing the filter, of course).

 

You could void your warranty if you're still in the 3/36 bracket. If your fan motor quit working and your dealership saw your furnace filter, your warranty claim would be denied. As another poster stated "use your recirc button". Since I draft off of semi trucks to keep my stellar 58mpg highway mileage, I use my recirc button often with good results. Again, stick with OEM.

 

I agree with Hefaust that the HVAC fan should not be overloaded. This is easily seen too; listen to the sound of the fan with an OEM filter, no filter and your alternative filter. If the latter one noticeably lowers the pitch, it is not a good choice.

The vast majority of the alternative filters discussed at PriusChat will not cause any problems. As always, judge for yourselves.
